The Streamable’s experts rank the top shows currently available to stream today.
Just about everything in the television and entertainment industries has changed in the past five to 10 years. Not too long ago, the month of September was focused almost exclusively on the return of football and the launch of a new, robust slate of TV shows. However, as cord-cutting rapidly decreased the number of Americans watching television in traditional ways, the release calendar has shifted. So while there are still a number of new and returning shows premiering on broadcast channels during the back half of the month, it is nowhere near the numbers of decades past.
Many of the best titles on TV have migrated from networks and cable channels to streaming in recent years, but with the non-standard release schedules, it can be tough to keep up with what is airing where and when, and which shows are actually worth watching.

Dying for Sex hopes to have life at the 2025 Emmys.
Gold Derby has confirmed that the FX limited series is submitting four different actors for consideration.
Michelle Williams, who plays Molly — a terminal cancer patient who leaves her husband to explore the full breadth and complexity of her sexual desires — will be submitted in Best Limited/Movie Actress. The five-time Oscar nominee won this category in 2019 for playing Gwen Verdon in Fosse/Verdon.
Jenny Slate, who plays Molly's best friend and caretaker, Nikki, will be submitted in Best Limited/Movie Supporting Actress. The Saturday Night Live alum who won a Critics Choice Award for Obvious Child (2014) would be a first-time Emmy nominee for her dramatic turn.

In the wake of The White Lotus and Dying for Sex, two television shows drenched in the pheromones of lust, The Hollywood Reporter decided to rank the 20 sexiest TV shows this week. Where, you might wonder, do comedies rank on the list? Not surprisingly, the list is dominated by streaming dramas where the latitude for nudity and general horniness is a little wider. A few comedy shows did make the list, however, as you’ll read below.
Before we get into the Hollywood Reporter’s rankings, though, consider a few other sitcoms that might have qualified for the list…
Dream On
The whole point of HBO’s Dream On was to take advantage of the pay cable network’s willingness to show naked people running around the bedroom. Imagine a sitcom in which someone’s dress falls off every week and you get the idea.
Bob’s Burgers

Six years ago, Michelle Williams won the Best Limited/Movie Actress Emmy for her role as actress-dancer Gwen Verdon in FX's Fosse/Verdon (2019). Now, Williams could become the 15th actress to win at least two Emmys in this specific category, thanks to her role on FX's Dying for Sex.
Williams plays Molly Kochan, a terminal cancer patient whose tragic, often funny, and wild sexual journey is at the heart of the story. Kochan’s podcast, cohosted with her friend Nikki Boyer, serves as the foundation for the series, which dives deeply into themes of sex, desire, friendship, and death.
The last person to win double Emmys in Best Limited/Movie Actress was Kate Winslet for Mildred Pierce (2011) and Mare of Easttown (2021). It took her 10 years to claim the bookend trophy, while Williams could accomplish the feat in just six years. Should Williams prevail, both actresses would also be undefeated in this race.

[This story contains major spoilers from the Dying for Sex season finale.]
After their first Zoom call, co-creators Elizabeth Meriwether and Kim Rosenstock knew Michelle Williams was their Molly Kochan.
The role sees Williams’s character balancing humor and tragedy up until her final moments. Adapted by Meriwether and Rosenstock, Dying for Sex is based on the real-life stories of the late Molly, shared on her podcast that she co-hosted with best friend Nikki Boyer (played by Jenny Slate in the series) about exploring her sexuality in her 40s after she was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer.
The FX series’ wild sex scenes push the boundaries and show Molly experimenting with being a dominatrix and trying out her sexual partner’s kinks. One, in particular, was in episode five’s “My Pet,” where one of the men Molly is with is dressed in a dog suit — and stays in character. He asks Molly to perform his biggest desire,...

Major series returns and highly anticipated premieres dominate April’s release list.
Spring is all about rebirth and renewal, and in the first full month of the season, some of TV’s biggest shows are on their way back for their first or follow-up seasons. Two highly anticipated new series debuted during the first week of April—Netflix’s “Devil May Cry” adaptation and FX and Hulu’s “Dying for Sex,” starring Michelle Williams—but the best is yet to come this month. Several major series will return this month, including one of the year’s most anticipated returns: Season 2 of HBO’s “The Last of Us,” picking up five years after the Season 1 finale.
If the post-apocalyptic drama is (somehow) not your thing, there are plenty of other top titles to watch this month, such as the fourth season of Emmy winner “Hacks,” the long-awaited final season of “The Handmaid’s Tale,...

While “Dying for Sex” already confronts a handful of taboos as the FX series spotlights kinks, Bdsm and many, many sex toys, creators Liz Meriwether and Kim Rosenstock wanted to address an even bigger taboo in the finale: dying.
“These two taboos of sex and death in our culture — [we were] wanting to somehow shine more of a light on them,” Rosenstock told TheWrap. “Weirdly, at the end of the day, we were learning more on death than on sex, even, and that feels like something that is even possibly more taboo to really talk about … and really portray with this kind of intimacy.”

Her diagnosis sparks her to leave her husband of over a decade, Steve (Jay Duplass), and embark on a journey to explore her sexual desires and kinks with herself and several random men she meets on dating apps, in addition to “Neighbor Guy” played by Rob Delaney.

One of the stars from Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 1 has confirmed their status in in Season 2. The first season of Percy Jackson took the world by storm and was hailed by critics and audiences alike as one of the most faithful book adaptations ever. The show earned strong scores of 91% from critics and 79% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, but it wasn’t until shortly after the Season 1 finale that it was renewed for Seasons 2 and 3. Jay Duplass, who plays Hades in Percy Jackson Season 1, Episode 7 “We Find Out the Truth, Sort Of,” recently caught up with People Magazine to talk about his new show Dying For Sex, and he confirmed he will not be in Season 2, but he didn’t rule out a return in the future:

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Dying for Sex Season 1.] Dying for Sex has its fair share of wild scenes, but one particular sequence in the show’s finale episode stands out for its technical execution as Michelle Williams‘ Molly experiences delirium as death nears. For those who haven’t tuned into the FX series streaming exclusively on Hulu, Dying for Sex follows the story of Molly, a young woman who is diagnosed with terminal cancer and decides to experiment in search of sexual satisfaction before she meets her end. When Molly enters hospice in her preparation to die amid her ongoing cancer battle, she is informed by her hospice nurse (played by Paula Pell) that there are different stages to dying, one of which is delirium. This manifests in a fantastical dream sequence where items begin floating off the walls to circle around Molly, starting with a clock and the landline phone. Next, Molly turns...

For Jenny Slate, filming the FX series “Dying for Sex” prompted the seasoned comedian and actress to open up as a performer and a person, enabling her to feel “more free” by the end of the project.
“The combination of sexual awakening and terminal cancer diagnosis is not one that I’ve ever encountered before, so I was really lucky … to also be watching while I was performing, to get a glimpse of what it is like to try something new in this context, and I honestly think it really opened me up as a person,” Slate told TheWrap. “I felt a bit more free in my life, actually, when we wrapped, but I also felt a sense of loneliness, for everyone I had been around almost immediately.”

Michelle Williams appeared on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen this week, revisiting her experience filming Brokeback Mountain and reflecting on the response the movie received during its 2005 release. While promoting her upcoming FX series Dying for Sex, Williams responded to Cohen’s comments about the film’s lasting effect.
Cohen opened the conversation by expressing how much the film meant to him personally. “May I gush to you about what an important movie Brokeback Mountain was to me, and it is still I think in my top two movies of all time,” he said. He asked Williams whether she sensed its cultural weight while working on it. Williams responded, “Yes, because people were so open about it.”
She spoke about her experience during the press tour, saying, “I just remember doing the junket and you don’t get an opportunity to see a lot of grown men cry.

Michelle Williams swung by “Watch What Happens Live” on Thursday and learning that “Brokeback Mountain” — the 2005 cowboy romance that earned her her first Oscar nomination — is one of host Andy Cohen’s favorite movies, took part in some light ribbing of the often-maligned race drama that beat it at the Oscars for Best Picture, “Crash.”
“I was very upset about the Best Picture loss,” Cohen said. “I mean, ‘Crash’? Is that what won?”
“I mean, what was ‘Crash’?” Williams questioned slyly.
Cohen, energized by the light shade, responded: “Right, thank you! By the way, who’s talking about ‘Crash’ right now? I hear a pin drop. Yes, very upset.”

In my life, I have watched Michelle Williams play a character who dies in the series finale of a television show three times, but two have been particularly memorable. That doesn't seem like a lot, but considering the gravity and weight of these deaths, it's an emotional heaviness that stays with you.
The first time was obviously when her wonderfully misunderstood but tragically underrated character Jen Lindley died in the series finale of Dawson's Creek. I won't elaborate too much on my feelings about Jen's death, but just know that she deserved much better than going out as a plot device for Joey to finally make a decision between Dawson and Pacey.
Now, I've watched Williams play a character who dies in a show's series finale again, this time in the beautiful tragicomedy Dying for Sex on FX on Hulu. Williams previously won an Emmy Award for her portrayal of...

For a TV show about a woman dying from a terminal cancer diagnosis, “Dying for Sex” is jam-packed with just as much “wild slapstick” comedy as there is grieving and introspection — a balance that first attracted creators Liz Meriwether and Kim Rosenstock to the real-life podcast of the same name.
“What really pulled me in was just how emotionally complicated it was … I felt so much, and I was laughing so much at the same time,” Meriwether told TheWrap of the “Dying for Sex” podcast, in which Molly Kochan documented her sexual exploration after being diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer alongside her best friend, Nikki Boyer. “[It’s] really rare where a story is as emotional as it is funny, and I was excited by the challenge of it: how do you find so much comedy in these dark places?”

Terminal cancer, erotic daydreams of cunnilingus and finally having an orgasm, stepping on guys’ dicks, heartbreaking notions of mortality and friendship as love all merge like sweaty, messy sex in FX’s terrific “Dying For Sex,” a limited-series much more moving and sweet than much of this sounds.
From writers/creators/showrunners Kim Rosenstock and Liz Meriwether —the latter of whom made a super exciting creative leap in 2022, moving from jovial network comedy to the more meaningful Elizabeth Holmes prestige drama, “The Dropout” for Hulu with Amanda Seyfried (still funny in moments too)—“Dying For Sex” is based on the Wondery podcast of the same name by Nikki Boyer.

Michelle Williams appeared on “Watch What Happens Live” to promote her new FX series “Dying for Sex.” During the interview, host Andy Cohen took a brief moment to call out one of her most acclaimed movies: Ang Lee’s “Brokeback Mountain.” Willians earned an Oscar nomination for playing Alma, the increasingly isolated wife of Heath Ledger’s damaged cowboy.
Cohen explained to Williams “what an important movie ‘Brokeback Mountain'” was to him and so many gay men at the time of its 2005 theatrical release, adding: “I think it’s still in my top two movies of all time. Did you realize at the time you were making that, what a profound impact it was going to have on people?”
“Yes, because people were so open about it,” Williams answered. “I remember doing the junket, you don’t get an opportunity to see a lot of grown men cry, and...

Michelle Williams is still puzzled 20 years later by “Crash” beating out “Brokeback Mountain” for Best Picture. Williams said during “Watch What Happens Live!” (in the below video) while promoting series “Dying for Sex” that she is baffled by even the plot of “Crash.”
Paul Haggis wrote and directed the ensemble race drama that starred Sandra Bullock, Don Cheadle, Matt Dillon, Jennifer Esposito, William Fichtner, and Brendan Fraser. (Haggis was later found liable on three counts of rape and sexual abuse in 2022.) “Crash” won Best Picture at the 2006 Oscars, despite Ang Lee’s queer Western romance “Brokeback Mountain” having already won Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Original Score.
“Brokeback Mountain” starred Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger as two closeted cowboys who leave their wives, played by Anne Hathaway and Williams, for a few days every few years. The film was adapted from Annie Proulx’s novella by Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana.

Michelle Williams isn’t someone who’s easily swayed — the Emmy winner and five-time Oscar nominee is in a "happy, stable place" in her life. But when it came to FX's limited series Dying for Sex, she couldn’t help but feel an intense and mysterious connection to the story.
"She cast a spell on me," Williams tells Gold Derby, referring to Molly Kochan, a terminal cancer patient whose tragic, often funny, and wildly sexual journey is at the heart of the story. Kochan’s podcast, cohosted with her friend Nikki Boyer, serves as the foundation for the series, which dives deeply into themes of sex, desire, friendship, and death.
After Molly (Williams) receives a diagnosis of Stage IV metastatic breast cancer, she decides to leave her husband, Steve (Jay Duplass), and begins to explore the full breadth and complexity of her sexual desires for the first time in her life.

Cancer isn’t funny. Erotic kinks are often smirked at in movies and television, almost never portrayed with humor that also respects what participants get out of them.
“Dying for Sex,” then, is a f—king miracle.
To call the FX/Hulu limited series a sitcom would be to diminish the healing positivity it lavishes on both title subjects. Yet laugh-out-loud comedic it consistently is. Poignant and adorable too. Empowering if that’s what you want from it, but not insistent in that regard.
Any tears the show will bring are eminently earned. And there’s a good chance it’ll get you hot.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Dying for Sex Season 1.] FX‘s Dying for Sex follows one woman’s very straightforward quest: to have an orgasm with another person. Michelle Williams‘ Molly kicks off the series with a devastating stage 4 diagnosis after previously beating breast cancer. So, why does Molly’s dying wish involve reaching that sexual peak? She’s married to Steve (Jay Duplass), who has taken over caretaker duties since her first diagnosis, but also hasn’t touched her intimately since her first bout with cancer. It turns out that trauma from her childhood has also played a role in her inability to reach the heights she hopes to in this series. Having been molested by her mother’s (Sissy Spacek) ex-boyfriend as a child, Molly’s experience looms large over the encounters she has in the series, pushing her to step out of her comfort zone and own her sexuality. Helping her in...

Somewhere between a devastating cancer diagnosis and delightfully awkward sex, Michelle Williams, Jenny Slate, and Rob Delaney, have managed to find humor and heart in Dying for Sex. No other television show has confronted cancer quite like this. It's a cancer comedy. But it will also make you weep. The FX limited series is based on the podcast of the same name by Nikki Boyer, played by Slate, about her friend Molly, played by Williams, who learns her breast cancer has returned. Given an undetermined amount of time to live, Molly makes finally having good sex her one bucket list goal — and the result are some sexy, hilarious, eye-popping sex scenes.
"Thank God for Rob," Williams told Gold Derby about navigating their kinky and sometimes awkward scenes at Wednesday's New York City premiere of the series. "It's something only the two of us will share. I've never done scenes like that before,...

Shannon Murphy wants to change the conversation around death. “I’ve been obsessed with death from such a young age and in many ways it’s this great adventure that we will all go on,” says the Australian director. “If we start changing the way we talk about it and look at how we can guide people through death and mourn them without hiding it from society, it could be beautiful.”

April is here, and that means there's new shows and seasons premiering on streamers, including Hulu. It's a bit of a slower month, but there's still some exciting additions to come that we can look forward to. If you need a reality fix, there's a new season of Vanderpump Villa. There's also comedy special Jessica Kirson: I’m the Man, and an all-new game show, Got to Get Out.
However if you're like me and prefer scripted shows, that's honestly what I'm most looking forward to. And there's three dramatic ones, including The Handmaid's Tale season 6, coming to Hulu in April 2025. Check out the list below!
