Just to be clear, I’m about to suggest you consider giving money to a film project with no recognizable stars, a director you’ve probably never heard of, and a plot that involves zero billionaires who dress up like bats to frighten criminals. But Damon Colquhoun’s Pixie Dust does involve a superhero of sorts. The story involves a teenage girl whose mentally ill mother stops taking her medication. It’s a real-life issue that becomes injected with magical realism when the girl discovers a family secret that can save everyone, but that can also potentially kill her. Why Watch? In this inventive short from Damon Colquhoun, a young man is trapped by a family who deals in human trafficking. He stands on the cusp of achieving the capability of teleporting himself to a different world merely by imagining it, but he’ll have to act quick if he’s going to save the latest girl to fall into his brother’s basement. Thick with plot and brimming with a creepy unease thanks to an unrelenting score and two devilish villains, Transporter opts for unnerving atmosphere over mind-blowing optics. That doesn’t mean it gets lazy on the visuals — the close-cropped camera work does some serious lifting toward making us feel as trapped as our young hero, and there’s a gorgeous rendering of the imagined planet in the mix as well.
