Film Review: The Wolves Always Come At Night (2024) by Gabrielle Brady
Image
There aren’t many films that grab you with the power of synergy between documentary and scripted story so you can physically feel what is unfolding in front of your eyes. In the case of Gabrielle Brady‘s mesmerizing hybrid “The Wolves Always Come At Night” which has just had its world premiere at Toronto this happens instantly, the moment the film opens with the shepherd spouses Davaa and Zaya, horseback riding through in Buutsagaan in the Bayankhongor Province of southern Mongolia to watch over their goats.

The Wolves Always Come at Night is screening at Toronto International Film Festival

Since the film’s opener, there is no question of the authenticity of what we are observing. This comes from the director’s choice to work with real people she met before shooting the movie, those who inspired her to tell the story in the first place. The helmer has...

‘The Wolves Always Come At Night’ Review: Climate Change Forces Mongolian Displacement In This Dull Narrative [TIFF]
Image
Let it be said that nowhere, absolutely nowhere, on the unwritten list of movie rules is it specified the pace at which any one film should set for itself; on one end, there’s the frenetic energy of “Run Lola Run,” on the other exists such slow-movie behemoths as the seven-hour “Satantango” or the 22-minute opening of 2009’s “Friday the 13th.” 2024 brings us “The Wolves Always Come at Night,” a film that attempts to blend documentary and a fictional narrative alongside purportedly commenting on the displacement of rural herdsmen from one specific climate change-affected part of the globe, all under the direction of Gabrielle Brady and co-writers/stars Davaasuren Dagvasuren and Otgonzaya Dashzeveg.

16 Buzzy International World Premieres at This Year’s Toronto
Image
The Toronto Film Festival is awash with international titles. Led by Mohammad Rasoulof’s “The Seed Of The Sacred Fig” and Gints Zilbalodis’ “Flow,” the festival’s huge Centrepiece spread alone has 38 titles from outside Canada and the U.S. The Discovery section has another 18.

Not all Toronto international titles are world premieres, however. Here are 16 which are sparking good word of mouth. Variety isn’t claiming they are the best. The buzz might not be justified. But they are certainly worth tracking.

Anima, the Filipino studio behind Erik Matti’s Venice winner “On The Job 2: The Missing 8” and Sundance winner “Leonor Will Never” Die, joined Project 8 Projects to co-produce Antoinette Jadaone’s teenage pregnancy drama “Sunshine.” It turns on a young gymnast who discovers she is pregnant on the week of the national team tryouts. On her way to a seller of illegal abortion drugs,...

Mongolian Doc Subjects Denied Visas to Attend Toronto Film Festival
Image
Mongolian herders that are the subject of the documentary The Wolves Always Come at Night have been denied visitor visas by the Canadian government to attend a Sept. 9 premiere at the Toronto Film Festival.

Davaasuren Dagvasuren and Otgonzaya Dashzeveg, the writers and protagonists of the hybrid doc from Mongolia, are not expected to be at TIFF after they failed to secure visitor visas. “The visa process is so blatantly unfair. What took me 30 seconds online for my approval was a two-month-plus process for our Mongolian team, and they still didn’t get approved,” the documentary’s producer Rita Walsh said in a statement on Wednesday.

Director Gabrielle Brady’s documentary portrays a young couple, Dagvasuren and Dashzeveg, after a devastating storm brought about by climate change, forced to relocate from their home in the Mongolian countryside to the city, where they must adjust to a new way of life.

The initial Aug.
