The Bulgarian that was held hostage in real life has asked for privacy and wished to remain anonymous. The fictional character of Ilian, played by Admir Sehovic, is given the actor's name as the character's first surname, Ilian Admir Petrov, as it can be seen in his passport when he hands it at the hotel check in. Bulgarians have two surnames. The first one is the father's name, so it could be Admir or Admirov, shared only by siblings, and the second is the family name, Petrov, shared by cousins and extended family.

Due to legal issues with Apple, using the real store where the real-life incident occurred was not possible. The crew, therefore, had to scan the whole area of Leidseplein visible from inside the store and then recreate it in an airplane hangar in Katwijk.
