Elena Gilbert: It weren't real.
Stefan Salvatore: It was a spell showing us what we wanted to see.
Elena Gilbert: We weren't vampires. My parents were still alive. It was
[shakes her head]
Elena Gilbert: a fantasy. Like a movie. It was a life we never could've had.
Stefan Salvatore: But it still felt...
Elena Gilbert: Amazing.
Stefan Salvatore: Yeah. But you know, the life that we had, I mean, that was amazing too. And it wasn't... a spell or a prophecy. It was, it was real. We found love on our own.
[Elena nods]
Stefan Salvatore: You know, we had our ups and downs, we fought...
Elena Gilbert: I died.
Stefan Salvatore: Yeah. We changed. Both of us. And we grew. We grew apart, but that is real. I mean, that's life.
[sighs]
Elena Gilbert: [shakes her head] You couldn't cook.
Stefan Salvatore: And you could. Again, a fantasy.
[she chuckles]
Stefan Salvatore: I'll always love you, Elena.
Elena Gilbert: I'll always love you too. Do you think Damon and I will ever be able to talk like this? Like friends?
Stefan Salvatore: I think you can either be friends with someone or in love with them. I don't think you can be both.

Damon Salvatore: [finds Elena waiting for him, folds his arms] We need some rules here. If I'm not allowed to drive you home, then I definitely don't think you're allowed to ambush me in my bedroom.
Elena Gilbert: I just... I just wanted to... say thank you. Whatever you did, it worked.
Damon Salvatore: Ah. Well, I'm sorry to tear you away from paradise.
Elena Gilbert: It was paradise, actually.
Damon Salvatore: I told you, I don't wanna know.
Elena Gilbert: But you need to know.
[Damon sighs]
Elena Gilbert: I saw... a perfect life. Stefan and I were married, and we had kids. It was everything that we wanted.
Damon Salvatore: Well, we can always ask Markos to put it back.
Elena Gilbert: But it's not real. You and I...
[nods]
Elena Gilbert: we're messy and... complicated, but... we're real.
Damon Salvatore: And really bad for each other. Did you forget that part?
Elena Gilbert: [nods] Yeah, but I still need you in my life.
Damon Salvatore: As friends, right.
[she looks down]
Damon Salvatore: Right. No, Elena, I can't be your friend. It's too damn hard.
Elena Gilbert: Damon...
Damon Salvatore: No, I'm serious, Elena. I can't see you anymore. I don't wanna hear your voice. I don't wanna talk to you. I don't even wanna look at you.
[shakes his head]
Damon Salvatore: And I sure as hell don't wanna be your friend.
Elena Gilbert: If that's what you want...
Damon Salvatore: That's what I want.
Elena Gilbert: Okay.
[nods]
Elena Gilbert: Yeah, okay.
[walks away]

Caroline Forbes: [Elena seems to be coming to after apparently having zoned out] Hello? Elena?
Elena Gilbert: How did I get here? I was just standing at the doorway.
Caroline Forbes: Uh, you walked?
[chuckles]
Caroline Forbes: Hang on, did you just have one of those dreams? Like, right here?
Elena Gilbert: It didn't feel like a dream, okay? It felt... like it was real. Like I was just there.
Caroline Forbes: Weird.
Elena Gilbert: Caroline, if you bite your tongue any harder, you'll bleed. Say it.
Caroline Forbes: It's Psych 101. Actually, it's what comes before 101. You told Damon that you couldn't see him anymore and now you're having dreams about Stefan?
Elena Gilbert: It's not just about Stefan, okay? My parents were still alive. It was like a different life.
Caroline Forbes: [cell-phone rings] Stefan, hey!
Stefan Salvatore: Hey.
Caroline Forbes: Is everything okay?
Stefan Salvatore: Well, you know how sometimes you feel crazy and you call me and I tell you you're not crazy?
Caroline Forbes: Even though most of the time I am.
Stefan Salvatore: Well, I need you to tell me that I'm not crazy.
Caroline Forbes: Uh, no promises.
[chuckles]
Stefan Salvatore: I was walking to my car and I nearly got plowed over in the middle of the street because I was having some vision of Elena.
Caroline Forbes: I take that back. Actually, you're not crazy at all. Something's going on.

Elena Gilbert: [finds Damon sitting forlornly in front doorway on porch] What are you doing out here?
Damon Salvatore: [takes sip from drink] Ah, you know. Looking at the stars, listening to the universe laugh at me.
Elena Gilbert: Damon...
Damon Salvatore: We were doomed from the very beginning, Elena. We were always gonna end up here.
Elena Gilbert: [sighs, scoffs] Damon... they're just visions. As soon as we find Markos, they'll stop.
Damon Salvatore: And then what? We're friends? Can't wait.
Elena Gilbert: [she leans her head on his shoulder, takes his drink away from him, takes sip herself, sighs] Look, I know we are in a bit of a weird place right now. Hey.
Damon Salvatore: Hmm?
Elena Gilbert: Look at me.
[he looks at her sadly]
Elena Gilbert: The universe doesn't control anything.
[shakes her head]
Elena Gilbert: It's not real.
[sighs, feels another vision coming on]
