An anime’s pilot is one of the most crucial things to its initial success. Quite a few series, like Pluto and Oshi no Ko, devote an entire hour to starting off their story just right. The first episode has to not only grab the attention of viewers with gripping scenes and dialogue, but also showcase everything that the anime could offer in terms of story, characters and animation.
An anime’s first episode is supposed to spark interest and promise audiences a tale worthy of their time. Countless great anime have had fantastic first episodes, but only a handful have had some truly amazing debuts, and even fewer live up to the promise of carrying that same quality into the rest of the series.

One of the trends coming out of anime recently is the focus on demon lord stories. While they have been a part of the medium for a long time, this trend has seen a recent surge in popularity. Anime like Fall 2024's Demon Lord 2099 and Spring 2023's Dead Mount Death Play are just some of the most recent examples. Thus far, both anime have seen a good reception from fans, and this isn't a trend that will be slowing down anytime soon.
Demon lord anime can take on quite a few different approaches. They can focus on how sympathetic the demon lord is, despite being a villain. They can also center on how powerful they are, playing out that fantasy. Demon Lord 2099 tells the story of a sympathetic demon lord who's not as powerful as he once was and is a fish out of water in a cyberpunk world.

In this space of inorganic cold, in the pouring rain, in the warmth of your deep despair next to me. How do those forgotten by everyone sing when they sing a song? With this in mind, I sang with the maximum of the pummeling energy that the music possesses. This was a hymn just for you. Shiyui can praise the reemergence of the Demon Lord as often as she could." One of the most popular character archetypes in modern anime is the Demon Lord. They’re typically found leading massive armies of monsters or terrifying soldiers, and the fantastical places they rule are, if not actual Hell, then certainly hell…ish. They’re often charismatic and wield a devastating array of magical powers themselves, and they’re often prone to finding themselves in ridiculous situations that they must try to overcome. That’s certainly the case in this fall’s Demon Lord 2099 , a show that gives us just one more example of why we can’t get enough of Demon Lords. Fantasy anime was once fairly widespread, and the genre was also home to some of the darker anime of decades past. That's not quite as much the case nowadays, with fantasy mostly being represented through isekai. Nevertheless, one upcoming show may just change that, and it actually has ties to some of the best recent fantasy works.
