In keeping with the theme of Beethoven, the composer whose given name is the title of the programme, the underlying background music is a reworking of Beethoven's 5th symphony.
The background music is based on Für Elise by Ludwig van Beethoven.
The fast-moving theme heard repeatedly in the score is the finale from the Piano Sonata No. 17, "the tempest."
