Meet Frolic. Yet another one-of-a-kind short film to feature and it's worth your time to watch. Frolic & Mae is the latest short from director Danny Madden, founder of the filmmaking collective Ornana. You may recognize his name as he made the fantastic hand-drawn short Confusion Through Sand previously. Frolic & Mae is a much more ambitious short, inspired by films like Gremlins and Lilo & Stitch, about a young girl who decides to create a cardboard monster in opposition to her cousin's friends only wanting to play with their phones. It gets lose, and turns out to be more than she can handle. Although this just premiered at the Atlanta Film Festival, they couldn't wait to release it online for everyone to watch - here it is. Catch it below. Thanks to ScreenAnarchy for the tip on this. Description from Vimeo: "Mae turns some cardboard into a little monster — Frolic — and Frolic turns everything into mayhem.

Ben Weissner and the gang at Ornana — Filmmaker 25 New Faces in 2012 — have just passed along this video for “The Girl in the Yellow Dress,” a single from Pink Floyd guitarist/vocalist David Gilmour’s new solo album. Explains Weissner about the video’s hand animation: His creative team had seen Confusion Through Sand (which has been re-edited to play at his live concerts) and were drawn to the dimensionality and movement in that style, so they asked if we’d bring a similar technique to their song. The music video is made of about 9.000 frames of animation that were […]...

Almost a year ago we featured a trailer for a short film called Confusion Through Sand, which was set to premiere at the SXSW Film Festival. The short is hand-drawn on recycled paper, and looks nothing like anything we've ever seen before. Not only that, but the camera movements are amazing. It tells the story of a young soldier "in a hostile desert, scared as hell and trained to react," no doubt referencing the Iraq war. The director tipped me to let me know the short is now available online in full. Suffice it to say, it's a must watch, well worth the wait. One last warning: "this gets loud and intense and may be hard for some people." Synopsis for Confusion Through Sand from SXSW: "A nineteen year old kid finds himself alone in a hostile desert, scared as hell and trained to react." The short film is 11 minutes...

With everything shifting more and more into the digital age, it's increasingly rare to find filmmakers still working on hand-drawn animation in the old-school, flipbook-style method. But that's exactly what the folks at Ornana Films did for their new short film Confusion Through Sand, and the results are absolutely stunning. (We actually featured the trailer for this project nearly a year ago, but now the full project is online for all to see.)
Here's the brief synopsis:
A nineteen year old kid finds himself alone in a hostile desert, scared as hell and trained to react.
I haven't seen American Sniper yet, but I'm hoping that it has the same level of suspense as this does.
After you watch the video, you might be thinking the same thing I did: I wish I could have seen how they worked on this. Well, we're in luck, because they've also posted a behind-the-scenes video,...

With its violently kinetic camera moves and expressionistic suggestions of chaos, Confusion Through Sand is one of the best short films I’ve seen in a long time. It’s a stab at traditional animation that feels anything but traditional. It also manages to capture the fog of war in a way that’s as beautiful as it is disarming. The story follows boots on the ground as they hunt an unseen target and become targets themselves, lost in a maze of squat buildings and a field of vision blurred by beige. Writer/director Danny Madden has crafted a walled-in experience marked by sharp, punctuated sound design and a dangerous environment we can’t entirely see. The short played at SXSW, won a few other festivals and is now playing on PBS. It’s a fantastic short film that deserves all the exposure it can get, and I was surprised to see Madden’s name because of...

Nearly a year after its SXSW premiere, ornana’s Confusion Through Sand will have its PBS premiere tonight, ahead of Dan Krauss’ The Kill Team. The animated short will be available for free on Vimeo tomorrow, but for the time being, you can watch a behind the scenes video of the collective’s creative process. Filmmaker spoke to director Danny Madden and producers Jim Cummings and Ben Wiessner about the trajectory of their latest film, from a joint Kickstarter campaign, through division of labor, and securing distribution. Filmmaker: You packaged your Kickstarter campaign as a sort of two for one deal, raising post funds for euphonia and production funds for Confusion Through Sand. […]...

This might be something very cool, and potentially an awards winning short in the next year or two. SXSW has debuted a short trailer for an animated film called Confusion Through Sand. At first, Indiewire was billing this as the entire short itself, but the festival lists it as an 11 minute-long short, which means there's plenty more to see and this is just a tease. Confusion Through Sand is a hand drawn, animated short made by the 26-year-old filmmaker Danny Madden, made entirely on recycled paper, hence the look. The story follows a 19-year old soldier who finds himself alone in a hostile desert, scared as hell and trained to react. Here's the first trailer for Danny Madden's short film Confusion Through Sand, at SXSW via Indiewire: Synopsis for Confusion Through Sand from SXSW: "A nineteen year old kid finds himself alone in a hostile desert, scared as hell and trained to react.
