- Reese, still angry and racked with guilt over Carter's death, is sent on a flight to Europe, following cryptic instructions that lead him to a POI and fight for survival while trapped on an 8hr flight.
- Under the assumed name John Wiley, Reese is making his escape from his life with Finch and the Machine by taking a one-way flight to Istanbul. He is however diverted onto another flight via Rome. Initially believing it is all Finch's doing, Reese soon learns that he was placed onto that Rome flight by the Machine, who provides him with the next number in the form of a seat number on the plane. "4C" is occupied by a young man named Owen Matthews, who is accompanied by who Reese recognizes as two federal marshals. Reese initially has no intention about doing anything about Owen until the two marshals are taken out. With Finch's help and direct questioning, Reese learns that Owen is involved with a case of an online drug ring headed by a man code named Sphinx, Owen the site designer who is the only person who can identify Sphinx. Reese and Finch learn that there are many people on the plane after Owen, the only person who Reese trusting being the first class flight attendant, Holly. While Reese, with Holly's help, does whatever he needs to find anyone after Owen while protecting Owen from being killed, Finch learns that one of the organizations after Owen is the International Security Agency (ISA), Shaw's old employers. As such, Finch sends Shaw on her own mission to find out the ISA's interest in wanting Owen dead.—Huggo

- Reese, using the alias John Wiley, will fly to Istanbul, Turkey, but his flight is overbooked, and the company attendant changes his flight to Rome in the First Class. Then the flight attendant Holly asks him whether he may switch the seat to let a couple in honeymoon together. Reese has no objection and soon he finds a Federal Marshal unconscious in the toilet. Reese calls Finch and asks he is manipulating his flight to send him to another assignment, but he says that he is not. Reese tells the other Marshal where his partner is, and he is rude with Reese and faints immediately after. Out of the blue, a man comes from the rear of the airplane and injects a needle in the tight of the man in custody. Reese knock the man out and sees his tattoo in the arm with the word Lanceros. Reese sits where the Marshal was and asks Finch who Owen Matthews is since the cartel is trying to kill him. Then Reese protects him from two Mossad agents. Finch tells Reese that several countries are looking for a man named The Sphinx, who created a software in the darknet to sell drugs for a lower price. Soon Reese learns that Owen has developed the software and many agencies are trying to kill him, since they use drug money for supporting their secret activities. Meanwhile, Finch asks Shaw to visit her former colleagues from ISA to know why Owen is relevant for the national security.—Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
- Reese is in the airport on his way to Turkey. His fight is oversold and there appears to be something wonky with the airline's computer. He is switched to a First Class flight to Rome. Using another passenger's phone the machine appears to direct Reese to a certain passenger's seat.
Reese finds a Federal Marshal unconscious in the forward lavatory minus his sidearm.
Reese calls Finch to ask why he's sent him on another mission. Finch assures him that he is not responsible; he has not gotten a new numbers. Reese assumes the machine has gone rogue. Reese tells Finch he is not accepting the mission.
Reese tells the other Marshal what happened to his partner but he does nothing more than tells Reese to mind his business. Reese leaves and the Marshal stands, but immediately passes out. A man appears from the rear of the plane and stabs the man they were transporting in the thigh. Reese knocks that man out and pulls the needle from the transportee. He sees the word "Lanceros" tattooed on his arm of the unconscious assailant. Reese sits down next to the transportee, whose name is Owen.
Reese calls Finch with info about Owen and the cartel hire who tried to kill him. Finch says the law enforcement community is looking for a mysterious person called The Sphinx, who developed a black market e-bay. Owen worked for a company that hosted the Sphinx's site, which is why people may think he knows something.
Owen tells Reese he's on his way to testify, but assures him he's a nobody. Reese doesn't think a trained killer would go after someone who doesn't know anything.
Finch meets with Shaw and updates her about Reese. He wants her to visit her former colleagues ISA, as he thinks Owen may be relevant to national security.
Finch tells Reese about Owen potentially being a relevant number. After Reese hangs up he pushes Owen and finds out that the Sphinx asked for him personally and that he set up the black market site himself. Owen thinks the site cuts out the middleman in drug transactions, stopping people from killing each other. He thinks Sphinx is a visionary. Finch calls with word the hit man's boss is a kingpin named Harnandez who is one of the bazaar's largest suppliers. Finch still isn't sure why this makes Owen an issue for national security.
Reese has a nervous flight attendant help him, giving her the remote for the stun belt Owen is wearing. When two other assassins posing as a honeymooning couple go after Owen, Reese is able to stop them without alarming the rest of the passengers.
Shaw visits the ISA's travel agency front. She recognizes the man up front as Foster. She thinks he played a role in her partner being killed and roughs him up a little before calling in a favor. She asks him why Owen is relevant to national security. He gives her only a number.
Finch tells Reese the second two assassins were part of the Israeli MDMA market. Shaw tells Reese that her replacement with ISA is on the plane. Reese manages to knock out the ISA agent with a cane, but when he turns around sees that Owen is missing.
Reese finds Owen in a tiny closet and quickly renders him unconscious. He brings Owen to the cargo hold. While on a call with Finch, Owen admits that he is the Sphinx. The ISA agent comes down to join them.
Shaw approaches Hersh at a restaurant. She drugs him and asks him about the ISA operative on Reese's flight. Hersh says the plan is to take out Sphinx since they had a financial interest in the bazaar they don't want made public. He passes out as Shaw leaves.
Reese and the ISA agent fight. Reese eventually takes him out with help from Owen. Finch tells Reese that Hernandez has ordered Owen taken out by any means necessary.
The other flight attendant on the flight takes out the two pilots and putting on a parachute, gets behind the controls and begins to steer the plane downwards.
Reese breaks down the cockpit door and takes out the assassin. While Reese fights the man Finch is able to take control and remotely land the plan.
At the Rome airport Reese gives Owen the address of a safe house and tells him to wait for Finch's call. He's out of business. It sounds like Reese might be going back to work.
After Reese has a brief cocktails date with the helpful flight attendant, he is joined by Finch who explains why he made the machine the way he did and they talk about Carter. Reese confirms that he'll be flying back to New York with Finch and getting back to work.
