- How a clerk became an erotica writer.
- Rajaram (Rahul Bagga), a small-town bank clerk, in Himachal Pradesh in the 1980's, who dreams of travelling to Delhi and becoming a reputed writer. Rajaram's uncle forces him to get married as he is of the right age, while Rajaram wanted to complete his studies in literature.
His litterateur aspirations are supported by none except his wife Renu (Tara-Alisha Berry). Rajaram is short on confidence is even unwilling to have sex with his new wife. She acts as a confidence booster for him & encourages him to have sex with her. Renu introduces Rajaram to the world of sensuous sex. Rajaram tries his hand at local poetry conferences but is booed off the stage. His poem covered a serious topic of migrant workers from Himachal going to other states to earn a livelihood under brutal circumstances. Mahesh (Istiyak Khan) is Rajaram's only friend.
Rajaram reveals his ambition to his wife, who supports his decision to move to Delhi. Rajaram leaves his job in haste (when his boss at a public bank insults his writing) to become a full-time writer. His boss had taunted him to earn a living from his writing. Rajaram cannot find a publisher in his Himachal locality for his book. Mahesh introduces Rajaram to a publisher Shivshankar who needs a writer for comic characters. Shivshankar advises Rajaram to write test papers for entrance exams or comic books, but Rajaram refuses.
One publisher Mr Purohit and his brother-in-law Bharti (Aakash Dahiya) agrees only if he would add sensational elements or Masala to his dull tale. Bharti says that Rajaram's story had no sense and it needed colorful characters. He is unable to decode Masala (Rajaram even watches a porn film to understand the meaning of Masala) until he meets Chacha, an eccentric, old village idiot who shows him the spicier side of life.
Rajaram writes his first pornographic story, which is based on a wife having an extra-marital affair. Rajaram's short stories are more sensual than explicit. They hint and titillate, as opposed to having obvious references to sex. Bharti gets an erection just reading the story and Mr Purohit agrees to publish. Bharti convinces Purohit to publish 300 copies to test the market response. The copies sell out instantly.
Rajaram adopts the pseudonym of Mastram (to protect his identity and reputation) and churns out his pornographic novel series, which becomes a best-selling cake. Rajaram would borrow simple stories from his everyday life, give them an extreme sensual angle and then create his own story out of it. For example, he witnesses the local grocer hitting on a female customer who comes to buy salt at his shop and creates an entire story out of it.
Rajaram's family, including his wife, wants to read his books. To avoid telling them the truth, he gets the publisher to print copies of his serious books & puts them at home for display. But that publication doesn't sell & causes a loss to the publisher. Soon, Renu is pregnant. Rajaram breaks up with Mahesh when Mahesh criticizes his writing in his serious novel. Mahesh feels that success has gone to Rajaram's head and hence they are not friends anymore.
Mastram goes from success to success, but that spawns more such books to be published in the market. Rajaram gets rich however all credits are attributed to Mastram not Rajaram. With copycats in the market, his books stop selling & suddenly the book royalties reduce. He has a fight with Mr Purohit & stops writing. Soon he is in money trouble. Other publishers refuse to publish his serious work & only want Mastram.
Soon, Rajaram has a daughter & is pained to see his wife borrowing old clothes from neighbors. He approaches his old publisher Mr Purohit to resume Mastram. Meanwhile, Mr Purohit and Bharti is also having trouble with his other writers & welcomes Rajaram with open arms.
Rajaram's wife Renu is troubled & asks his friend Mahesh to investigate what he does for a living. Mahesh trails Rajaram & figures out that his books are being published under the name Mastram & that his latest novel involves a story on the sexual relationship between Mahesh & Renu. Mahesh is livid & exposes Rajaram's truth to his entire family. He even makes Renu read his latest story.
Renu leaves Rajaram, but Mastram goes on to become a nationally successful brand.
