How are Disney and Pixar’s chances for winning Best Animated Feature?
Image
Flow is the recipient of this year’s Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. And it is a tremendous feat, with it being Latvia’s first Oscar win and continuing the streak of animated feature victories from studios that are not from Disney nor Pixar.

Credit where credit is due for the tiny victor starring a black cat and its non-talking animal friends, it beat both the Pixar tentpole hit Inside Out 2 and the new DreamWorks darling The Wild Robot, directed by Disney veteran Chris Sanders. That was quite a feat.

But for Disney and Pixar, that moment may cause concern for the once mighty studios and its future in winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

Current output from both studios is rocky at best. Their last victories are for Soul for 2021, and for Encanto for 2022. Soul stood out from the crowd on that year, with the...

Daria Cercek Named President Of Disney Live Action Theatrical, Exiting Co-President Post At Paramount Motion Picture Group
Image
Exclusive: Walt Disney Studios has named Daria Cercek as President, Disney Live Action – Theatrical. She will report to David Greenbaum, President of Disney Live Action and 20th Century Studios. She will leave her post as Co-President, Motion Picture Group at Paramount Pictures, where with Michael Ireland she steered the studio’s film slates.

With the impending appointment of Skydance leadership at Paramount Global, I’d heard for some time that the well-regarded Cercek was being courted for a top post at Disney, and I’m told this has now transpired with the full support of Paramount President/CEO Brian Robbins. Ireland will run the division at Paramount.

In her new role, Cercek will be responsible for spearheading all aspects of Disney Live Action’s theatrical slate, driving the development and production of films inspired by the studio’s iconic stories and characters, and championing original projects. Reporting to Cercek will be Sam Dickerman,...

Daisy Ridley's 'Star Wars' Movie Just Landed 'The Bourne Ultimatum's George Nolfi as Writer
Image
Daisy Ridley's upcoming Star Wars movie has found a new writer, one that might bring a bit of espionage to the franchise. At Star Wars Celebration 2022, Lucasfilm announced three new Star Wars movies. The one that seemed to gain the most traction was one set to feature Daisy Ridley returning as Rey and would pick up 15 years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. The movie had acclaimed documentary filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy set to make her feature film directorial debut. Yet, like many Star Wars productions, the film faced many delays and went through two sets of writers. The movie now seems back on track as a writer with a history of sequels and a knack for sci-fi will take a crack at the script.

The Hollywood Reporter revealed that George Nolfi had been hired to pen the script for the new Star Wars movie centered on the character of Rey.

Ryan Gosling in Talks to Star in Shawn Levy’s ‘Star Wars’ Movie
Image
Ryan Gosling is in talks to star in a new “Star Wars” film, this one from director Shawn Levy, according to multiple media reports, representing one of the first major developments in the feature film plans for the “Star Wars” brand.

Levy’s project has been in development for years — all the way back to 2022 — with others being added to the overall slate since then. But with Gosling potentially joining the galaxy far, far away, it’s a big shot in the arm to the franchise and makes it likely this would be the next feature film to go.

Lucasfilm and reps for Gosling did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

For this one, Jonathan Tropper is writing the script, reuniting with Levy and his 21 Laps production banner after working together on “This Is Where I Leave You” and “The Adam Project.” But it’s unclear what era...

Shrek 5 Gets A New, Later Release Date As Minions 3 Is Moved Up By An Entire Year
Image
Deadline (via Toonado.com) has learned that Shrek 5 is now set to open on Wednesday, December 23, 2026. The long-awaited sequel had originally been scheduled for July 1, 2026, so while this delay isn't too big, those extra five months are going to sting for impatient Shrek fans.

On the plus side, Minions 3 has shifted from June 30, 2027, to that July 1 slot. That's a huge jump forward and an indication work on the movie must be progressing well.

It's also been revealed that an untitled Illumination event movie has moved from March 19, 2027 to Minions 3's vacant June date.

Shrek 5 is being released to coincide with DreamWorks' 25th anniversary, with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz all set to reprise their respective roles as Shrek, Donkey and Fiona. Shrek franchise veterans Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon will be at the movie's helm.

Dorhn worked on the second and third movies as...

“Gonna be the busiest year for animation ever”: Shrek 5 Delay Won’t Break Your Heart When You Realize 4 Legendary Animation Franchises Are Packing Serious Heat in 2026
Image
Delays and setbacks are a part of the creative process of filmmaking, but that doesn’t stop them from stinging any less. This is why the news that Shrek 5 has been postponed is heartbreaking. This said flick would serve as the fifth installment in the fan-favorite animated film series, and was previously expected to hit the screens by next year, i.e. 2026.

A still from the Shrek film series. | Credits: Universal Pictures.

It has been years since the Green Ogre graced his presence on the screens with something new, so the anticipation and excitement surrounding the same’s release was pretty high as well. But while the delay is disappointing, four other legendary animation franchises seem to make up for it as they seem to be packing series heat with their releases for 2026 in Shrek 5‘s stead.

Shrek 5 is delayed, but these 4 other flicks might make up...

Universal Releasing 'Minions 3' a Year Early, 'Shrek 5' Delayed to December 2026
Image
Universal Pictures will release two of its biggest animated film franchises in 2026, as Minions 3 has been bumped up from 2027, which has delayed Shrek 5 back to a December release. When Shrek 5 was announced to arrive in theaters in the summer of 2026, fans were over the moon. Following the critical and box office success of Puss in Boots and the generational nostalgia for the Shrek franchise, timing Shrek 5 for the franchise's 25th anniversary seemed like a perfect play. The studio gave the DreamWorks Animation film the prime Fourth of July weekend window that Universal has previously used to great success with Illumination's Despicable Me and Minions franchise.

Variety reports that Universal's release schedule has now been shaken up. Shrek 5 has now been delayed from July 1, 2026, to Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2026, giving it a five-day holiday weekend for the Christmas season. Minions 3 has now been bumped up from June...

Netflix's Chronicles of Narnia Rumored Release Date Sets Up a Dune & Jumanji 3 Showdown
Image
According to Bloomberg, Barbie director Greta Gerwig's next film, a new adaptation of C.S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia series for Netflix, will reportedly hit theaters in December 2026. There hasn't been any official announcement from Netflix or Gerwig as of this writing, so take this rumored release date with a grain of salt.

If true, though, it would mean the film, which Netflix is reportedly eyeing for an IMAX release, will be battling for box office supremacy against Denis Villeneuve's third Dune film, based on the novel Dune: Messiah by Frank Herbert, which is also rumored to be out at the same time. On top of that, Sony revealed they planned to release Jumanji 3, starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Karen Gillan, and Jack Black, on December 11, 2026.

Nick Frost & Simon Pegg's 'Spaced' Show May Never Return
Image
Nick Frost has been in multiple acclaimed films in 2024, from Black Cab to Krazy House, and recently, Get Away. Meanwhile, Simon Pegg is reprising his long-running role in the next Mission: Impossible film, and will be in Ice Age 6. Director Edgar Wright is following his hit Last Night in Soho with the highly-anticipated remake of The Running Man. They're all successful creatives, but 25 years ago, before their films Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, they were relatively unknown artists who came together (with the great Jessica Hynes) for an era-defining TV show, Spaced.

Spaced was a groundbreaking comedy series that set the stage for their careers, despite only having 14 episodes across two seasons. Fans have always wondered, will there ever be more Spaced? Nick Frost, hot off writing and acting in the new dark comedy thriller Get Away, told MovieWeb in a recent interview:

"I think we're always...

James Mangold Provides Update on His 'Star Wars' Movie
Image
While James Mangold's latest film, A Complete Unknown, is about to hit theaters, fans are also curious about the status of his upcoming Star Wars movie, too. Mangold was announced to be directing a film centered around the First Jedi in May 2023 at Star Wars Celebration. Few details about Mangold's upcoming Star Wars film have been revealed, but the director has indicated work is being done.

While speaking with Deadline, Mangold revealed that he and co-writer Beau Willimon are not done with the script, but they are still working on it. Mangold said they are trying to finish a draft, which has likely been difficult in the past few months as Mangold has likely been focused on finishing and promoting A Complete Unknown.

As he told Deadline:

"My partner [Beau Willimon] and I have been writing it. I don't know what's next because we haven't gotten to the end of that...

'Star Wars' Actor Temuera Morrison Has No Idea About Boba Fett's Return
Image
Besides a consistent Disney+ release schedule, Lucasfilm and its Star Wars projects are experiencing a period of uncertainty, which is also affecting some of the actors involved. Specifically, Boba Fett actor Temuera Morrison has recently discussed whether he will return as the iconic Bounty Hunter in a future Star Wars project. For now, we shouldn't expect Boba Fett to appear in any of the upcoming series Disney and Lucasfilm have planned.

Between the delay of future feature film projects Lucasfilm has in development, such as the Rey spinoff losing several writers, and no official plans outside a new trilogy from Simon Kinberg, it's clear that Disney is still trying to figure out what direction to take the classic IP in. What's more, Morrison is also just as in the dark about the plans for Star Wars as the fans are, making Boba Fett's return unlikely in the foreseeable future.

While speaking with The RaeSide,...

Lucasfilm Is Avoiding A Big Mistake With Its New Star Wars Movies
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

It has been nearly five years since a "Star Wars" movie graced the silver screen. That movie was "Star Wars: Episode IX -- The Rise of Skywalker" and it brought the sequel trilogy to a close on an uneven note. What just about everyone seems to agree on is that the second and third entries in that trilogy were divisive, leaving Lucasfilm on uncertain ground when it comes to the future of the franchise. The future is, slowly but surely, starting to come into focus, with several "Star Wars" feature projects currently in development. And while much remains mysterious, it does seem that Disney and Lucasfilm have learned at least one lesson from the recent past.

Previously, Disney had not one but two new "Star Wars" movies dated for 2026, which seemed like a mistake. We'll get into the why in a moment.

As Disney removes another Star Wars movie from its schedule, insiders explain why the process seems so messy
Image
Another day, another hitch in the process to make a new Star Wars movie. Per TheWrap, Disney has removed an upcoming Star Wars film originally set to land in theaters on Dec. 18, 2026 from its schedule, replacing it with Ice Age 6. The movie was probably the long-incoming film about Rey (Daisy Ridley), who was introduced in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. That movie has gone through a lot of hiccups behind the scenes, with the latest being the exit of writer Steven Knight.

Will the Rey movie ever come to fruition, or will it join the pile of forgotten or discarded Star Wars movies, including never-made projects from of Taika Waititi, Kevin Feige, Patty Jenkins,Rian Johnson and Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss? Why is it apparently so freaking hard for the people at Lucasfilm to decide on their next move?

The Hollywood Reporter polled some insiders on that question.

The Rey movie as been bumped from 2026, and I'm okay with this
Image
Over the weekend, it was announced by Variety that a Star Wars film was bumped off the December 2026 release date for Ice Age 6. While we don't officially know what this film was, all sources seem to point out that this was the Rey Skywalker film setting up the return of Daisy Ridley to the franchise and directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.

And I'm okay with this news.

There are several back-and-forth reports around the signing of Simon Kinberg taking on the next trilogy, which we discussed here in the "I'll believe it when I see it" category of news. Some seem to hint that it will be a Rey trilogy, which makes sense as she can be a major focus to build the next Star Wars era for a new generation.

I do understand there can be some frustration around this delay as we watch the Marvel Cinematic Universe churn out film after film,...
