Fittingly, the scarf Vera wears in this final story is the same one as she wore in the pilot story 14 years before.
The final series (14) of Vera was filmed across a range of locations in the North East. Production began in Cambois, a village in south-east Northumberland. Other filming locations include Gateshead, South Shields and Glanton. After cameras went down for one last time, the Vera cast and crew enjoyed a wrap party at St James' Park, Newcastle.
The Dark Wives stones are fictional. Rothley Crags (Scots Gap) is where the three fictional ancient standing stones were created in the Northumberland countryside. Doubling as the title of the episode, the stones are named 'The Dark Wives'.
Based on Ann Cleeves novel of the same title.
The dog showing up at Vera's home is symbolic to the flashback scenes with Vera's father. As depicted at the beginning of the episode. Vera sees her father as a poacher of sorts, trying to force her to steal eggs from the nests of birds of prey, which Vera refused because it was morally wrong. This dog is clearly a Lurcher, known in history to be associated with poachers. Poachers in need of the dogs intelligence, stamina and natural ability for hunting, cross-bred Greyhound or other sighthounds with dogs, such as collies or terriers with rough coats to disguise their true lineage. This was due to the strict laws that only the landed gentry or similar, could be in possession of hunting dogs.
