In the opening scene Captain Benson addresses the officer in charge as "Inspector" a few times, however he is not wearing the rank insignia of an Inspector. He has a single star on his collar which indicates the rank of Deputy Chief, plus the badge on his coat says "Deputy Chief". The NYPD has two grades of inspector, the first is Deputy Inspector which is the next rank up from Captain, a Deputy Inspector wears the same style badge as a Captain and their rank insignia is a gold oak leaf (the same one the military uses for a Major). The next rank after this is Inspector which uses the same style badge that Deputy & Assistant Chiefs and Commissioners use, and their rank insignia is a gold eagle, the same style of insignia that the military uses for the rank of Colonel.
