The player can choose to play as either a hunter or the monster in the single-player campaign or the competitive-multiplayer experience. The game pits a lone monster against four hunters in several different game modes. Missions have a variety of objectives, including search and rescue, destroying the monster eggs, defending a base against the monster and monster hunting. The game ends when either side complete their primary objective, or the monster has been slain by the hunters.

The overall level of violence is moderate as blood effects and visible injuries/wounds (on the monster) are depicted. Human characters are also depicted being eaten by the monsters, without strong details such as dismemberment.

Therefore, realistic but not excessively graphic violence with depictions of bloodletting are depicted in the game-play.

'Evolve' is a multiplayer first-/third-person shooter set in the future on a colony planet called Shear. The planet has been overrun by alien monsters, and hunters have been called in to eliminate the monsters and evacuate colonists.
