A father and his thirteen-year-old daughter are living an ideal existence in a vast urban park in Portland, Oregon when a small mistake derails their lives forever.
The film makes some major deviations from the plot of the novel that inspired it. Author Peter Rock said that "a lot of the things they did were frustrating and mystifying to me," but he did like the final film.
This is not a drill.
In the Washington cabin, Will is planning a route to town and says "Follow the creek, across the ridge". Will would be aware that creeks cannot cross ridges because one side would be uphill.
