Pioneering documentarian Willard van Dyke directs a documentary about the poor allotment farmers of the Appalachian farm communities of the day... and makes his central point the fact that they are taught things that have no bearing on their lives: all about how to start stamp collecting and nothing about how to rotate crops.
This movie, produced for the University of Kentucky, was part of the movement that led to government projects like the Tennessee Valley Authority and greater social mobility. Myron McCormick narrates in an angry voice.
