Daniel Radcliffe was already a fan of the show when he was approached to voice himself. He claims that of the numerous Harry Potter jokes he's heard throughout his life and career, this episode features his favorite.
Salinger's request for a Red Bull and a bananafish sandwich and Todd's response "It's a perfect day for a Red Bull!" are references to J.D. Salinger's melancholy short story, "A Perfect Day for Bananafish."
In Prickly Muffin (2014), a dog makeup artist can be seen working on young Sarah Lynn during her and BoJack's "Horsin' Around" days. In this, the same dog, 20 years older, is making up Daniel Radcliffe.
Though the opening sequence resembles the film Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014) (also about a washed-up actor trying to regain relevancy), the episode was well into production before the film was released. The sequence was actually meant to resemble an Aaron Sorkin "walk-and-talk," the most well-known example of which would be The West Wing (1999).
In the beginning, several trademarks of Aaron Sorkin are parodied, including the "walk and talk," the Ivy League-educated TV executive producer, and the phrase "I'm never, never sick at sea." In addition to that, "Hollywoo Stars and Celebreties - What Do They Know? Do They Know Things? Let's Find Out!" is broadcasted from the "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" which is the eponymous, fictional studio where another Aaron Sorkin's show Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (2006) is shot.
