Geoff Craven
- Chief Superintendent Reginald Bright: The tiger had cached its kill in a wallow, to keep away the hornets and blowflies. So we staked it out from a machan.
- Geoff Craven: Tree-hide, huh?
- Chief Superintendent Reginald Bright: Yes, that's right. Mackendrick took first watch. He must have fallen asleep. First thing I knew was this fearful blow to my left arm. Mackendrick was being hauled down the tree - with his neck in the tiger's jaws.
- WPC Shirley Trewlove: Did you get it, sir?
- Chief Superintendent Reginald Bright: Oh... yes. I must have blacked out from loss of blood, because I woke up in hospital. Anyway, that was the end of the man-eater of Kot Kindri.
- WPC Shirley Trewlove: Sounds frightfully heroic.
- Chief Superintendent Reginald Bright: No, I fear not. A hero would have saved Mackendrick.
- Geoff Craven: [after hearing Bright's story about shooting a tiger in India] Tells a good tale, your man; I'll give him that.
- DI Fred Thursday: If Mr. Bright says that's how it happened, that's how it happened.
- Geoff Craven: I doubt it. I mean, look at him. One sniff of a man-eater behind him and he'd be hiding under the desk.
- DC Endeavour Morse: You clearly don't know Mr. Bright.
- Geoff Craven: I know a man who's all hat and no cattle when I see one.
- DI Fred Thursday: [discussing tiger-shooting with Craven] Have you had much experience in that regard?
- Geoff Craven: [derisively] Enough to know that all you're likely to bag today is a wild goose.
