What does it take to coax Ben Affleck to the deteriorating heart of Hollywood Blvd. at 9 a.m. on a Wednesday to deliver the two-minute elevator pitch for his latest movie to a room full of journalists? Just Netflix, apparently.
The ruling streamer held its 2025 programming preview, Next on Netflix, with an Egyptian Theatre event that could only be described as a living sizzle reel. In addition to Affleck, Tina Fey, John Mulaney, The Duffer Brothers, WWE wrestlers and a pre-taped Guillermo del Toro all showed up alongside chief content officer Bela Bajaria as she ran through a dizzying slate of upcoming series and films.
There were updates about the final seasons of Stranger Things (coming soon!) and Squid Game (coming sooner!) and first looks of both, as well as trailer debuts for Del Toro’s Frankenstein and Affleck crime thriller Rip, between Bajaria’s compelling pitch. Though, at times,...

When “Hacks” won the Emmy earlier this year for outstanding comedy, it shocked pundits who had expected another victory for “The Bear.” Even the “Hacks” producers were gobsmacked, jaws agape as they reached the stage. But for the execs at Universal Television, which produces “Hacks” for Max, that stunning moment came with a little vindication.
“‘Gratifying’ is an understatement,” says Universal TV president Erin Underhill. “It was huge. For me personally, it was a career highlight. This was not a show buyers were looking for. Everyone passed on it.”
The “Hacks” win was not only a shot in the arm for the comedy genre — which is experiencing a bit of a renaissance this fall — but also another notch in the belt for Universal’s comedy division, which is also seeing an uptick in its output.
“It had been a long time since we won that award,” says Jim Donnelly, Universal TV comedy development exec VP,...

The 2025 CineMart runs from Feb. 2 to Feb. 5, 2025. Rotterdam’s industry section, the IFFR Pro Days, is scheduled from Jan. 31 to Feb. 5.
Among the highlights of the projects set for CineMart are Ukrainian auteur Dmytro Sukholytkyy-Sobchuk’s Something Strange Happened to Me, the director’s follow-up to his acclaimed debut Pamfir; Kenyan filmmaker Angela Wanjiku Wamai’s neo-Western Enkop; and The Uganda Project, the new film from Daniel Mann, whose Under a Blue Sun screened in Rotterdam’s Tiger Competition in 2024.
As is to be expected from a Rotterdam lineup, the 2025 CineMart selection is thematically and geographically diverse. Cheryl Dunye’s Black Is Blue, which explores anxiety over AI, stands alongside Jazmín López’s Faust, an exploration into the origins of authoritarianism. Marcelo Gomes...

Writer/director Sean Baker does his own casting so he was reviewing many contenders for the role of Ivan, son of a Russian oligarch in Anora. Mark Eydelshteyn impressed Baker by sending him a self-tape where he performed all of his lines in the nude.
“It’s very risky in Hollywood to send nude self-tapes,” Eydelshteyn said. “But, it’s Ivan.”
Eydelshteyn said he was already struggling with the English language dialogue of the audition. Furthermore, Ivan is a wealthy character with fancy clothes. The actor had to think creatively to convey this with his own limited resources.
“I have no expensive clothes at all so I made the decision I will be nude and it will be honest, honest to Sean, honest to this story,” he said.
Baker did not make Mikey Madison audition for the lead role of Ani, a stripper and sex worker who falls in love with Ivan.

Last Friday, comedian Sebastian Maniscalco had Madison Square Garden roaring with laughter with bits about Amazon deliveries scaring him when they arrive at midnight, the total oddness of New York City’s so-called rat czar, the voracious moles devouring his yard, and his wife’s (allegedly) bad driving. He pulled faces, changed his flat Chicagoland patter into silly voices, and contorted his body into knots to bowl over the sold-out crowd. At the end of the night, he warmed everyone’s hearts by inviting his mom and dad, both immigrants from Italy,...

For “Vermiglio” director Maura Delpero, winning Venice Film Festival’s Silver Lion grand jury prize is a dream born from a dream.
The drama is set at the end of World War II in an Alpine village, where the arrival of a soldier causes disruption in the dynamics between three sisters. “Vermiglio” marks Delpero’s follow-up to “Maternal,” which takes place in an Argentinian refuge for teenage mothers run by nuns and made a splash on the festival circuit.
Venice jury president Isabelle Huppert praised “Vermiglio” for being a war story in which you never see war. “It’s like you have a great offscreen subject matter, but you get to see what’s going on only through a small eye, through the latch of a door,” she noted at a press conference.
Following its Venice bow, Delpero’s striking sophomore work is segueing to Toronto and has already been...
