  • JoyBear Films' RIOT GIRLS is a pleasant specimen of couples erotica which inadvertently raises the question: whither storyline porn? The avoidance of just another gonzo title is commendable, but where's the expected content?

A popular girl band consists of singer Jasmine Jae, guitarist Samantha Bentley and drummer Franki, last-named looking great though in context she qualifies as the Charlie Watts (age-wise) of female porn rock drummers.

The catch is that no music is played during the 2-hour video; no touring of the band occurs, no singing or even rehearsing takes place. The premise is merely an occupation, perhaps lacking the fetish content of cornily making the trio nurses, stewardesses, maids or secretaries, the better to show off outfits or in the last case, having them wear glasses. And the stylization of costuming that even Meryl Streep adopted in her recent RICKI AND THE FLASH is lacking.

So why bother? The reason is that a film has to be about something, while gonzo sex is about nothing other than a commercialization of the species' need to procreate.

The actresses and their big-dicked counterparts here make an impassioned plea for extending Mankind's existence into the future, though displaying the alarming tendency of porno people to follow Onan's example and spill the seed, on breast, on belly or on posterior.

Voice-over artist Nell Rose narrates as Jasmine's character, noting a modicum of conflict arising when Jae takes possession of Sam's boyfriend Ryan Ryder. Ultimately Sam's okay with the switch, and the fans know that in real-life Ryan and JJ have been a couple for over 7 years, long before they took to humping under the hot lights for a living.

A 3-way lesbian scene is conjured up, involving Jess West and Satine Spark with JJ. Filling out the program, the always delightful Ava Dalush is cast as the band's manager, who has a try-out (no pun intended) with singer/guitarist Luke Hotrod, and we get to witness Luke's surprisingly impressive technique on a six-stringer, before he demonstrates even better technique on Ava's body. I've been watching porn too long, so i was confused by the decision to leave Luke's character unnamed and give Ryan's character the name Luke - I thought porn actors used their regular stage name as their character name to avoid slip-ups that might ruin a take.

It adds up to a nothing movie, but quality sex.
