  • The sci-fi proof of concept is a very common beast in the world of short films; the idea of them being that they give a taste of what a bigger project would be if someone puts up the money. Except more and more it seems that they are not that, but rather just a visual calling card to show that the makers can produce something that looks cool, that can go viral, but probably has nothing in it to suggest it could be a feature, or that these are the people you'd want to make it.

This is the case with Lost Boy, since there is really nothing here to engage with other than the design. To start with this though, it is a cool looking film, with plenty of scenes that carry weight by virtue of their familiarity from other sci-fi works, while also being really well designed and delivered in their own right. It is a film you could easily use stills from as your desktop background. However if you try to go beyond this, you'll find almost nothing else. There isn't a plot to speak of, and there is little to make you curious to know more since there is nothing substantial to hook you in.

I'm sure it will set the internet on fire and get lots of hits, but for me it is just another piece of eye candy standing on the shoulders of giants.
