Murdoch's former fellow Young Scholar award-winner and friend Winifred Pink's fingerprints on the weapon and successive sets of lies make her the sole prime suspect in the presumed murder of an unidentified man who was dragged away bleeding, his son of five is missing. She claims to be duped by an anonymous client hiring her to deliver a letter, which proves blank, but William's superior IQ and inventions -notably a tracking bug and lie detector- plus Crabtree's research diligence and sharp observation gradually unveil the truth, a complex Montréal-based plot involving an undercover mob family, still a race to prevent escapes.
