- Eleven makes plans to finish what she started while the survivors turn up the heat on the monstrous force that's holding Will hostage.
- Mike and Eleven tearfully embrace and Eleven tells Mike that she heard him every time he tried to contact her. Hopper reveals that he has been hiding Eleven, much to Mike's anger. Eleven embraces Dustin, Lucas, and Joyce, but ignores Max.
Karen is in the bath reading a trashy novel. Billy rings the doorbell and flirts with Karen asking if Max is there. She gives him directions to Joyce's house. Her tone and body language suggest that she is interested in Billy.
Eleven reveals that she is able to close the gate that she opened a year ago, but that she needs to be back in Hawkins Lab to do it. Mike notes a problem with the plan - closing the gate will kill the Shadow Monster and his army, but very likely will kill Will too. The group needs to get the Shadow Monster to leave Will's body before Eleven closes the gate. Joyce realizes that they have been keeping Will cold because the Shadow Monster likes it cold. They need to make the host (Will's body) uninhabitable for the monster. Joyce, Jonathan, and Nancy take the unconscious Will to Hopper's cabin so that he will not know where he is. Hopper takes Eleven to the lab leaving Steve supervising Dustin, Lucas, and Max at Joyce's house. The following three scenes happen simultaneously.
Jonathan, Joyce, and Nancy tie Will to a bed in the cabin, light a fire, and blast heat lamps on Will. He wakes up in pain. Jonathan is visibly disturbed, but Joyce turns up the heat all the way. They see the veins in his neck turn dark, which spreads to his face. Will breaks free and tries to choke Joyce but Nancy puts a hot poker to his skin. The Shadow Monster comes out of Will's mouth and flies out of the cabin. Jonathan radios Hopper to close the gate.
Mike, Dustin, Lucas, and Steve devise a plan to divert the demo-dogs from the lab, leaving it safe for Eleven and Hopper to navigate. Billy arrives at Joyce's house. Steve tries to get rid of Billy by telling him that Max is not there, but he sees her through the window. He beats up Steve until Max sedates him with the sedative they gave Will. The kids steal Billy's car and drive to the tunnels. They find the central hub in the tunnels and light a fire, causing the vines to recoil. They run back to the hole to escape but are stopped by a demo-dog. Dustin realizes that the dog is Dart and gives him a candy bar, which allows them to pass by and escape. Steve and Dustin are nearly attacked by more dogs, but the dogs are suddenly called away. Mike realizes that Eleven has made it to the gate.
On the way to the lab, Hopper and Eleven make up and for the first time, Hopper mentions his daughter Sarah to Eleven, opening up to her about his past tragedy. He implies that he thinks of Eleven as his daughter now. In the lab, Hopper and Eleven find Dr. Owens gravely wounded. He administers first aid and asks for his help to let Eleven lead a normal life when all this is over. They make their way to the central area where the gate is, which is swarming with demo-dogs. At the moment the kids light a fire in the tunnels, the dogs disappear leaving Eleven free to close the gate, which looks like a giant beating heart. Eleven remembers what Kali told her about channeling past anger into her power. Fueled by memories of abuse in the lab, Eleven closes the gate with her powers, which leaves her physically and emotionally drained.
One month later, Hawkins Lab is shut down. Officials are seen leaving while Murray gleefully watches and a reporter's voice reveals the the department of energy admitted to a cover-up of Barb's death. Barb's family has a funeral and is able to have closure. Owens has recovered and gives Hopper a forged birth certificate for Eleven which names her Jane Hopper. He suggests that they lie low for a year to be on the safe side and Hopper asks if she can have one night out. The kids are seen getting ready for the Snow Ball. Max dances with Lucas and kisses him. Dustin gets rejected by a few girls until Nancy (who is chaperoning) asks him to dance and tells him that he's her favorite of Mike's friends. Outside, Hopper and Joyce share a cigarette and he consoles her about Bob. Eleven arrives at the dance. She and Mike dance together and he kisses her. Outside, the camera angle shows the school turning over to reveal the Upside Down with the Shadow Monster looming above.
