- The Grand Tour is in Croatia to make a completely unscripted film featuring Jeremy Clarkson in an Audi TT RS, Richard Hammond in an Ariel Nomad, James May making a fire engine out of an old Lada, and everyone trying to find a non-existent link between the three.
- The trio head out to Croatia, to combat criticism that their program is too "scripted", by making a completely "unscripted" film - as part of this film, Clarkson and Hammond focus on comparing the Audi TT RS (1.5 L 5 cylinder turbo, 0-60 in 3.5 secs, 400 BHP) and the Ariel Nomad (290 BHP, but weighs only 670 kgs) through a drag race and a rally stage, while May turns up with Lada Riva and sees how good it can work as a fire engine. The 3 cars are completely mismatched as the film is unscripted. Since they couldn't decide what they were doing, they all went in different directions. Clarkson and Hammond decide to race their cars, but the road runs out suddenly.
Since it is unscripted, the paparazzi start following them, making it impossible for them to have a race. They try to find an airport for a drag race, but they refuse to suspend commercial operations for them and say if they had rung a couple of weeks ago, something would have been worked out. Eventually they find a strip, but then must find an average Croatian to start the race. They find a sexy bimbo, whom they must move to the finishing line as she is too distracting for the start. Eventually Clarkson beats Hammond hands down.
They then try to find a gravel track to test whose car is faster off road. eventually they find this as well. Hammond 2:05.7. Clarkson 2:03.7. But Clarkson doesn't like the Audi TT because of its squeaky brakes. Meanwhile May is busy converting his car into a fire engine. When ready, May just patrols around the town looking for a fire to put out. Not finding anything he puts out a staged fire, and then someone's barbecue. May then asks Hammond and Clarkson to start a bush fire so he can extinguish it. But by the time he gets there, the fire has grown and May can't control it. An air fire brigade is summoned, and it drops tonnes of water on May's Lada, completely destroying it.
Meanwhile, Hammond tests out the McLaren 720S at the Eboladrome. Beautiful to look at. engine bay glows red when you open the doors. Matches the Ferrari 488 and the Lambo Huracan in looks. 0-60 in 2.8 secs. 212 mph. BP 208,000. 4L V8 twin turbo with 710 BHP. 91% of the car is different to the McLaren 650S. Computer controlled suspension is more advanced than the P1. P1 only has 17 more BHP. You can vary the traction control to specify the amount of drift you want on the car. Boot space is good, and handling is awesome!! Clarkson doesn't like the seat controls or the brake pedals on the 720S. 1:17.9 on the Eboladrome, same as the 650S.
The trio host an awards ceremony for "Conversation Street". Nissan Juke award for the worst car of the year goes to the Nissan Juke. Hard ass to follow (worst looking rear end) (nominations Honda Civic type R, Toyota C-HR) goes to Land rover discovery. The you would but you know you shouldn't award (You like the car, but are embarrassed to admit) goes to Corvette ZR1. Lack of continuity award goes to Hammond, who switches car in the middle of a shoot giving no consistency to the film. Accidentally filing up the petrol tank of a super-car with water award goes to Hammond. Hammond destroyed both the super-cars he drove this year.
Michael Ball (dad worked at British Leyland, launched the mini with a campaign on "what you can get inside a mini") and Alfie Boe (worked on the shop floor at TVR, the shop floor would put messages on the car before it went to paint. One guy died when he went into the paint shop without his mask and inhaled cyanide paint) compete to see who the fastest classical singer amongst them is. Michael 1:23.3, Alfie 1:24.4 .
