- The film tells the story of an American diamond merchant Lucas Hill (Keanu Reeves), who travels to Russia to sell rare blue diamonds of questionable origin. The deal begins to collapse almost as soon as he comes to Russia. His contact Pyotr (Boris Gulyarin) was supposed to supply him with a sample of blue diamonds, but he ditched Lucas at the minute, moments before the deal is supposed to go down Now the buyer Boris Volkov (Pasha D. Lychnikoff) is angry. His associate is Pavel (Rafael Petardi). to save his own ass, Lucas promises to deliver the entire consignment (blue diamonds worth $ 50 MM, for a commission of 2%) in 2 days to Boris. Lucas travels to Mirny to meet Pyotr.
Meanwhile a rival of Boris, Vincent calls and offers Lucas 7$ commission to hand over the diamonds to him, instead of Boris. Lucas falls into an obsessive and passionate relationship with a Russian cafe owner Katya (Ana Ularu) in a small Siberian town Mirny. Yefrem (Aleks Paunovic) is Katya's bar's patron and is mildly abusive towards her. Katya's elder brother Ivan wants her to marry a local boy, Anton.
Lucas meets a local informer who tells him that Pyotr is hiding as he sold some fake diamonds to a local mafia boss, who is now hunting for him. He gets a lead on Pyotr but is stuck in Mirny as his pilot refuses to fly the plane anywhere due to bad weather. Meanwhile it is revealed that Lucas has a wife back home but is not very connected to her. Everyone in Mirny wants Lucas to stay away from Katya, but she is interested in him. That night Lucas and Katya have sex. Lucas gifts Katya a candle before he leaves Mirny
In St Petersburg he searches Pyotr's regular room and finds the sample diamond inside a similar candle that he gifted to Katya. He asks Katya to come to St Petersburg with the candle. But the sample inside Katya's candle is the fake. he contacts Boris and asks for more time, but Boris invites him for an evening meeting. Before that Vincent contacts Lucas and tells him that the FSB is suddenly interested in Lucas and advises him to leave Russia immediately. Lucas goes to meet Boris, but Katya follows him. Boris makes Katya suck his dick as the price for the delay of delivering diamonds to him.
As Lucas and Katya return to the hotel, The FSB is waiting for him. They tell Lucas that he has apprehended the fake diamonds from the guy who bought them from Pyotr. They want Lucas, and his diamond trade cred, to help sell the fake diamonds to Boris as real blue diamonds. Fully knowing that this means a death sentence for Lucas, Katya and Lucas's wife. Lucas delivers the diamonds to Boris and assures him that they are real. Boris trusts him doesn't use a spectrometer which would have told him that they are fakes. Once the money is wired, the FSB drops Lucas to the airport for a flight back home. But Lucas goes to Mirny to meet Katya. He also has a SMS from a spy that Pyotr is hiding on a piece of land near Mirny. Lucas visits the land and finds Pyotr dead.
Ivan wants Lucas to leave Russia asap with Katya. But Lucas doesn't want to drag Katya into his fight with Boris. Ivan understands and provides arms to Lucas. The next morning Pavel and his team attacks Pyotr's cabin where Lucas is waiting for them. Lucas puts up a fight but is eventually shot dead by Pavel
