in 1969 Liverpudlian Eddie Braben reluctantly agrees to write scripts for the fading comedians Morecambe and Wise, whose act he despises. He determines to turn them into a true double act, creating many of the catch-phrases and sketches which would be their trademark. However his success puts increasing demands on him, as more and more celebrities clamour to be in the duo's shows and more scripts are called for and his health suffers. He agrees to one last script - the ratings-topping Christmas show of 1977, after which a grateful Morecambe and Wise tell him, "You made us."
