Last month, Jordan became the first country affected by leprosy this century to completely eliminate the disease. It has tormented humanity for around 4,000 years, and although it’s now easy to cure with antibiotics, it lingers on in places where that isn’t well known or people don’t have access to them. Brothers Luke Morgan and Jake Morgan’s Oscar-qualifying film The Boat is set in Nepal and follows a father as he realises that his beloved daughter is exhibiting symptoms of leprosy – a discovery which forces him to make a painful decision.
“A couple of years ago, Jake and I were doing some contract work with the Mission to End Leprosy, which is a charity headquartered here in Ireland, in Dublin,” Luke told me when we met up to discuss the film. “Its CEO is a man by the name of Ken Gibson,...

9-1-1: Lone Star showrunner responds to fans' reactions to the way Sienna McClain was written off the series for its final season.
Speaking to TVLine, showrunner Rashad Raisani defended the way in which McClain's fan-favorite character Grace Ryder was written off in the recently released fifth season of 9-1-1: Lone Star. As Raisani explained, he was unwilling to have McClain's character killed off-screen or suffer any sort of tragic demise. Instead, the series opted to explain her absence as being the result of missionary work. "The only thing we could think of to justifiably pull Grace away from her family and job was an even higher calling," Raisani said. "And the only thing in Grace's world that could answer that was God."

Submarine movies are an interesting genre. Thanks to their location, primarily on the submarine itself, there’s already an inherent sense of claustrophobia and tension that is unique to the films. The best use this to their advantage — with Wolfgang Petersen's The Boat as a prime example. In these movies, characters aboard contend not only with the stress of being below the water's surface, but also with a unknown undersea terror or enemy warships intent on their submarine’s destruction. With apologies to The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine, here’s the top of the undersea.

The world’s TV scene faces challenges. But it still has opportunities. Marc Cistaré, a writer on “Locked Up,” has seized one, the strategic co-production alliance between TelevisaUnivision’s ViX streaming service and The Mediapro Studio.
Rolling off the hiked ambitions of Spain’s TV scene after streamer success, he has created“Las Pelotaris, 1926,” which The Mediapro Studio Distribution is bringing onto the market at this week’s MipTV.
A ViX Original, airing from March 10 on its platform as part of its premium offer, the show combines the craft learnt from two decades of writing Spanish prime-time series and the larger canvas, gender focus and artistic boldness of contemporary scripted.
Sold outside Latin America and the U.S. by The Mediapro Studio Distribution, which these days means a lot in terms of profile at Cannes TV markets, the series weighs in as one of the market’s big Spanish-language bets...

War is a living nightmare, wreaking its destruction on innocent lives and civilizations. It casts deep wounds that shape our history, present circumstances, and potential prospects for the future.
War has been a central theme in all of human history since its inception. It inspires both captivation and terror, with stories of bravery, resilience, and courage, as well as violence and death. It is the peak of danger – where any semblance of safety or security ceases to exist for those who fight. All that remains are humanity’s yearning for survival against insurmountable odds.
Hollywood has no shortage of war films meant to both awe and educate. Some promote the best humanity can offer as people come together for a common cause. Others reveal the horrific truth behind conflict’s brutality and man’s capacity for harm on an unimaginable scale.
Here is the ultimate fan selection of the top...

Wrestling and law enforcement in paradise are a mismatch at first glance. But upon closer examination, both seek to triumph over evil-doers and bring order to chaos. Thus, it’s only fitting that Fox’s WWE Friday Night SmackDown and CBS’s crime drama Hawaii Five-0 share the individual show demo wars honors for Friday night, both bringing in an 0.8.
Continuing its strong start to the second half of the season, Hawaii Five-0 rang up an 0.8 to start the broadcast night for the eye network, albeit down slightly from last week’s 0.9. It also had the night’s second-largest total audience. That bled nicely into Magnum P.I. and Blue Bloods, both scoring an 0.7. Magnum was down slightly from last week’s 0.8, while Blue Bloods held steady, bringing in the largest total audience of the night.
The demo that loves wrestling was again the story on Fox, bringing in a solid 0.8 for its two hours,...

It is a glorious week to be a horror fan, because we have a ton of amazing Blu-rays and DVDs heading home on Tuesday. And while there’s a lot to be excited about, on a personal note, I’m beyond thrilled that Anna and the Apocalypse is finally getting a tangible home media release, because I feel like I’ve been waiting forever to add a copy of John McPhail’s delightful musical to my own collection of movies.
Beyond that, the amazing-looking House of Hitchcock Collection arrives this Tuesday, and looks to be a must-own set for any Alfred Hitchcock fans out there. Kino Lorber is showing some love to Nightmare Beach this week with their special edition release, and Arrow Video has put together a much-deserved limited edition set for The Prey as well. We also have a few genre favorites making their 4K Ultra HD debut this week: The Shining,...
