Nolan's training officer tells him in reference to their police car, "This is your shop, do not call it a car!". Mere moments later, as she opens the squads door, she says, "We are now inside the car!".
Officer Nolan shoots a suspect in the leg. He is then seen at roll call the next day. LAPD Regulation 794.40 requires that he would be immediately removed from field duty pending investigation and review. His return to field duty would have to be approved by the Chief of Police and under no circumstances could he be returned to field duty until at least 14 days had elapsed since the shooting.
RA units do not respond to a scene where there is active gunfire. They stage at a safe location and respond once it is clear.
Officer West freezes while under fire. His training officer warns him if it happens again he would be fired. Nolan is told much the same thing for leaving his partner to engage an active shooter firing at other officers. In fact, freezing under fire just once would result in a trainee being terminated immediately, while Nolan's actions would result in his being commended.
The manner in which Nolan is treated by the Sergeant, notably in front of other officers, amounts to a hostile work environment. As a supervisor, it is against regulations to haze, harass, and humiliate (the exact terms he used when speaking to Nolan) any police officer. While professional job-related stress inducement is normal for police trainees, the personal attacks, such as the ones related to Nolan's age, violate Equal Employment Opportunity Guidelines and would not be tolerated by LAPD command staff. Any type of hazing or initiation is also prohibited in section 275 of the LAPD manual.
Chen says to Nolan after their first day that in fifteen months he'd be at the LAPD rank of police officer II. Promotion to that rank comes after completion of an eighteen-month probationary period.
The show follows officers operating out of a station in Mid-Wilshire, but the skyline of Downtown LA, which is seven miles away, is visible in the background when Nolan first reports, and Disney Hall--which is also in Downtown--is visible in the background when Nolan and Grey talk outside the station. Later, Nolan and Bishop respond to a call on Hollywood Boulevard which falls under Hollywood Division's area of responsibility while Mid-Wilshire falls under Wilshire Division's area of responsibility.
Officer Bradford's facial hair, as well as the Sergeant's beard both violate section 605.30 of the LAPD grooming regulations. This regulation requires officers in uniform to be clean shaven.
