One of the best films of 2020 — and the last one I’ll get to see in a theater for who knows how long — Kelly Reichardt’s “First Cow” (Lionsgate) sees the director once again turning to the American frontier to tell a story about America now. John Magaro and Orion Lee play two men in pioneer-era Oregon who go into business selling fried-dough “oilycakes” to homesick miners, but find themselves in the crosshairs of the plutocrat who owns the territory’s only source of fresh milk. It’s gorgeous, elegaic, witty, and powerful — and you’ll crave some funnel cakes.
Also available: Director James Sweeney, who also wrote and starred, makes an impressive feature debut with “Straight Up” (Strand Releasing), about a gay man whose lack of relationship success drives him to give women one last shot; two siblings try to fulfill their grandmother’s dying wish in...

When people tend to think of Central Asian cinema, regardless of genre, many would immediately conjure up images of the region’s vast steppes, striking awe in the eyes of many thanks to gifted cinematographers bringing the landscape to life, rendering its characters insignificant and enveloped by the expansive beauty. Many would tend to think of vivid colourisation or striking monochromes, with every pigment popping onto the screen in a dazzling display ripe for High Definition or even 4K. As far as the length and breadth of the region’s historical dramas and epics are concerned, these elements are translated into the costume and production design too, replicated with a historical accuracy usually akin to more famous Chinese epics. Given the magnitude of legends surrounding such a figure as Tomiris, a warrior queen who, depending on which account you believe, defeated King Cyrus II at a battle near the Syr...

‘Chasing Wonders’ (Photo: Sam Oster).
Arclight Films has taken the worldwide distribution rights to coming-of-age film Chasing Wonders, produced by South Australia’s Sla Films and the UK’s Met Film, launching sales at the virtual Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) this week.
Scripted by Judy Morris, the film was shot over five years across Australia and Spain and with a cast that includes Paz Vega, Edward James Olmos, Quim Gutierrez, Carmen Maura, Antonio de la Torre, Jessica Marais and newcomer Michael Crisafulli as the lead.
Due to make its world premiere at October’s Adelaide Film Festival, Chasing Wonders follows a 12 year old, whose sense of adventure and imagination runs wild, fueled by his maternal grandfather’s (Olmos) encouragement to journey to the magical Emu Plains. Against his father’s wishes, Savino takes off on an adventure of a lifetime and discovers that learning about life and living life are two very different things.
