- After the discovery of a second body, DCI Taggart zeroes in on a suspect who has a clear link to the victim but runs into problems with his superior, Superintendent Murray, who is old friends with the suspect.
- The discovery of a second strangled blonde leads DCI Taggart and DS Livingstone to video store owner Charlie Paterson, her employer and lover. Paterson and his wife Patricia have a broken marriage in which both of them openly cheat causing seething jealousy in one another. Taggart considers Paterson a prime suspect in the case, but his investigation is blocked by his superior, Superindendent Murray who is old friends with Paterson. Annoyed, Taggart ignores him and tips off a colleague in vice squad about Paterson's piracy business. He also has him openly tailed in a bid to smoke him out, but all this gets him are further reprimands from Murray. Eventually, he befriends Patricia pretending to understand her marriage troubles and learns that Charlie has a locked drawer in his desk where he supposedly keeps letters from the murder victim. Meanwhile, a careless remark from his sister in the local pub leads to local thugs finding out about Alec's rape conviction. At the funeral, they conspire with the first victim's family and lure Alec to a back alley where they savagely beat him up. At the same time, Michael Boyd's wife Liz discovers a scrapbook album about the murders and a wet stocking while Michael stakes out Charlie's video store. At the end of the episodes, a group of children discover a third body, hidden by the river.—Mateja Djedovic
