“Sam Bahadur,” a biopic of Indian war hero Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, is the latest feature from Meghna Gulzar.
Ronnie Screwvala’s RSVP Movies produced the film, which released theatrically in December 2023 and proved to be a box office success. The cast is led by Vicky Kaushal (“Dunki”) as Manekshaw and also includes Sanya Malhotra (“Jawan”) as his wife Silloo and Fatima Sana Shaikh as Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Gulzar’s previous films include “Talvar” (2015), starring Irrfan Khan and Konkona Sen Sharma, and “Raazi” (2018), headlined by Alia Bhatt, both of which were critical and commercial successes and “Chhapaak” (2020), featuring Deepika Padukone as an acid attack victim. She was looking for a subject to work on with Screwvala, who suggested the Manekshaw biopic as the late Field Marshal’s daughters had been in conversation with him about wanting to make a film based on their father.

January 2024 Box Office Collection: 64% Less Than Last Year (Picture Credit: IMDb)
Hindi films were supposed to start big this year in 2024 after the box office got a booster dose last year with Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan, which performed outrageously well at the box office. However, this year, Hindi films have not been able to match even 50% of what they earned last year.
This year, January 2024, was led by Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone‘s Fighter, majorly with other small releases collecting whatever they could in their capacities. However, the overall collection for January 2024 is not impressive at all.
In fact, it can be said that January 2024 is the lowest earning opening month of the year in the last four years. This comes as a little disappointment since it was expected that Fighter would also perform unbelievably well, even if it does not match Pathaan’s rage. However, the opening...

Makar Sankranti Box Office: How Much Have 15 Films Collected In The Last 10 Years (Picture Credit: IMDb)
Makar Sankranti is the first festival of the year. Festivals go hand in hand with the Box Office collection in Bollywood. However, it is one festival that has not yielded great results – the first festival that falls on January 14. Films that are released on the Makar Sankranti weekend have not performed well in the past few decades.
The last blockbuster that was released on Makar Sankranti was Hrithik Roshan‘s Kaho Naa Pyar Hai, which started the century with a bang. However, the last film to release on January 14 was Yamla Pagla Deewana, which did a fair business at the box office.
Ypd, starring Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol & Dharmendra, collected 7.75 crore on February 14. The film collected 55 crore in its lifetime and 23 crore on the Sankranti weekend. It was a hit at the box office.

January Box Office Openers: Will Katrina Kaif’s Merry Christmas Break The Dreaded January Jinx(Photo Credit –IMDb/Instagram)
Bollywood seemed to have followed a strange pattern for the release dates of films in December and January. While there is a constant battle to grab the spot for the last release of the year, there is an eerie silence to occupy the dates for opening a year. Usually, no big release is excited to open the year or become the first film to release in January. Ever wondered why?
January seems to be a little jinxed for films that open the year at the box office. Not that we believe in such stuff, but the data provided says otherwise. In the last 15 years, every first film of the year that has been released at the box office has met a disastrous fate.
Sometimes, filmmakers have even waited for the second...

January 2024 Box Office Collection Expectations From Katrina Kaif, Hrithik Roshan & Deepika Padukone ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
The year 2024 is expected to deliver a banger with Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone’s Fighter. However, it will not be the first film of the year. The first Bollywood film of the year would be Katrina Kaif and Vijay Sethupathi’s Merry Christmas.
Unlike the last year, this year has three releases in January. However, in 2023, January witnessed two other releases – Kuttey, which did not create much buzz, and Thalapathy Vijay’s Varisu, dubbed in Hindi. Both of them were very limited in terms of buzz.
So the only big release of January in 2023 was Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan, unlike this year when three Bollywood films were ready to hit theaters. But what is interesting is their expected opening numbers at the box office, according to the buzz.

EntertainmentHere are some of the moments when fandom's adoring gaze turned to harsh scrutiny on the industry.PTI2020 was the year when Bollywood leapt from the entertainment section to the top of the national news agenda. From Deepika Padukone's visit to Jnu at the beginning of the year, the traumatic news of Sushant Singh Rajput's death to Kangana Ranaut's run-in with the Maharashtra government and a host of stars being questioned for their alleged use of drugs, the issues came flooding in this year. The industry was faced with the brunt of the public's harsh scrutiny rather than the adoring gaze of fandom it was used to. There were no new films as the coronavirus pandemic halted production and theatres closed down, but the Hindi film industry and its stars remained under a relentless spotlight. Here are some of the top "Bollywood" moments from this year. Deepika...

Mumbai, Nov 9 (Ians) Actor Vikrant Massey, who shared screen space with Deepika Padukone in Chhapaak earlier this year, says is tough to be a female superstar like her in this country.
"It is hard to be a Deepika Padukone in our country. It is difficult to be a woman with a voice. She is the biggest star and an icon in our country. If she can be subjugated to this, then anyone could. Unfortunately, there is no public discourse today. I stand by what I said," said Vikrant.
Deepika was in the midst of controversy around the release of Chhapaak in the month of January after she visited Jawaharlal Nehru University (Jnu) in Delhi in a bid to show solidarity with the protest against CAA. Her action infuriated many on social media, and the hashtags BoycottChhapaak and BlockDeepika had started trending back then.
Vikrant recalls working with Deepika and Chhapaak director Meghna Gulzar with fondness.

The premier new release of the week, Fox Star Studios? and Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment?s Baaghi 3, has embarked on a good (single screens) to decent (multiplexes) start of around 35 percent on an average. And given the decent to mixed reviews, ?the film saw some pick up during the latter shows.?
With the ensuing holidays, extending into mid-week, Tiger Shroff?s Baaghi 3 is expected to end up with a good weekend (as well as) opening week haul. The first day appears to be around 17.50 crore. Having said that, the previous edition of the film had seen a superb 55 percent opening, but that maybe due to the Rambo feel of Baaghi 2.
Meanwhile, Anubhav Sinha directed Taapsee Pannu starrer, Thappad, held on quite well netting 22 crore(to be validated), which is much better than Saand Ki Aankh and Panga and second only to Chhapaak, if we talk about similar genre female protagonist films.

Meghna Gulzar has cemented her place as a sensible female director in recent years. While Talvar led her to the limelight boosted by critical acclaim, it is her previous film – “Raazi” that secured her place in the big league of directors. The Irrfan Khan-starrer “Talvar” showed her skills to dwell in the nitty-gritty of a complex incident. Its Rashomon-Esque nature takes you back to the same situations over and over while getting even deeper into the infamous murder case. Despite having control over the emotions in the film, she largely builds it on the delicate and fallible human nature and its grounded depiction. Thus, the film goes beyond the scope of its central narrative and often becomes cathartic for the viewers.
‘Chhapaak’ takes a slightly different route. The film, as I would like to describe it, is a compilation of moments, largely dependent on their individual emotional impact. Based...

"I won't say much but I will say we all have witnessed how hard you work every day. Sometimes I wonder why you guys work so hard. I mean -- food, water or other utilities are one thing -- but to put your life at risk every day makes me wonder."

Amazon Studios released Les Misérables gripping police brutality drama and despite being a Cannes Jury Prize winner, recent Golden Globe nomination and being France’s official Oscar entry for Best International Feature, the film opened to a disappointing low, earning an estimated $24,414 in its four runs in New York and Los Angeles.
It seems that the awards season boost and critical acclaim couldn’t give the foreign-language film the push it needed for a strong theatrical opening. The film stars Damien Bonnard, Alexis Manenti and Djebril Zonga and marks filmmaker Ladj Ly’s directorial debut. The timely drama has nothing to do with the popular musical but is inspired by the real-life riots that occurred in the suburbs of Paris in 2005, a story that hits close to home for Ly as these riots had a long-lasting effect on his neighborhood, Montfermeil.

The interesting clash between two diverse genre films, Ajay-Saif?s historical Tanhaji ? The Unsung Warrior and Deepika Padukone?s acid attack biopic Chhapaak, well, it went the expected and predicted way as Ajay Devgn?s star power and Saif?s menace managed to provide Tanhaji an early lead over Chhapaak.
Coming to the details, while Tanhaji opened to a 20-25 percent response (higher occupancy in Mumbai circuit), Chhapaak managed 15-20 percent start.
The opening day numbers are going to be heavily in favour of Tanhaji given the better opening and release size (3800 plus screens) as opposed to limited release for Chhapaak (1500 screens). Having said that the latter shows at Delhi-ncr, Bengal and South saw Chhapaak covering significant grounds.
While that is what the actual report is, the good news is that the much maligned black January (early!) has witnessed a bright start as opposed to the usual practice, and it...
