Gabriela
(2001)

Script and direction is lacking.
Vincent Jay Miller apparently has been successful in getting everyone who worked on this movie, along with their family and friends, to give this movie perfect votes of 10 and leaving glowing reviews.

Scanning my local theater listings, I came across this movie. Having never heard anything about Gabriela, I, of course, came here to IMDB.COM to learn more about it. Much to my surprise I find that the movie has a User Rating of 9.5 with 113 votes. With a 9.5 rating I figure this movie must be the sleeper movie of the year. Heck, The Godfather only has a rating of 8.9. However, the movie I saw is a 9.5 rated movie in Bizarro World only.

I graciously give the movie a 6 out of 10. Graciously because I am giving the movie extra credit for being an independent film. The movie is a very freshman effort. The script and direction is lacking. Some scenes work but most do not. The characters with the exception of the grandmother seem to be under played.

By having his actors act behind the most distracting objects, Miller may have already created his signature look. There is a scene with a huge flower display on a restaurant table in which two actors can barely see each other without making an effort. Another scene is in a room full of large paper strings hanging from balloons on the ceiling. And still another takes place behind a kitchen island filled with such picture perfect vegetables that it could have come out of Better Homes and Gardens.

If you have a love of low budget independent film you may be interested in seeing this movie, however I fear most people will find the movie very boring. I find it very interesting that of the 15 people who wrote glowing reviews 9 of them have written reviews for this movie only, and the other 6 have only written one other review. Assuming these people are not associated with this movie, I fail to understand how Gabriela could practically be the only movie to inspire them to write a review.

George Washington
(2000)

Annoying
Everyone has their own take on movies. As I read other reviews there are people who seem to really like this movie, however I am not one of them. Some movies I find simply bad, Dude Where's My Car, but rarely do I come across a movie as this that is a complete torture to sit through. The following is my take on the movie.

It is SLOW. It is a bad 20 minute short crammed into a 90 minute movie. There are scenes in the movie that are obviously there to fill up time. The movie spends 5 minutes with a scene of a guy riding a motorcycle. That is all he is doing. Just riding a motorcycle through town. I don't remember him ever even waving to anyone.

The dialog is awful, and the acting is awful with the exception of the gentleman who plays the uncle. All other actors, I am using the term actor loosely since I am sure this is the first time any of them has tried to act, deliver their lines in a monotone style as if they were reading them from the page for the first time.

The one thing I did like about the movie was how even though the characters were of mixed races the topic of race or prejudice was not part of the movie.

Head Over Heels
(2001)

Don't bother seeing this movie
It is hard to believe this comes from the director of House of Yes. It has no story and absolutely awful dialog. It was like watching a 90 minute bad TV sitcom. All the comedy is forced with the lowest points being the models hiding in the shower as Freddie Prinze has a smelly bowel movement, the models getting covered in sewage while hiding in a bathroom stall, and Monica Potter getting humped by a great dane.

Dog Park
(1998)

An entertaining romantic comedy
An entertaining romantic comedy about a group of people who are very into their dogs. A great cast. Natasha Henstridge's best performance to date.

One Man's Hero
(1999)

Hollywood revisionist history
While I found the movie slow and boring, I also had a hard time feeling sympathy for a group of U.S. Army deserters that decided to enter the war against their fellow U.S. soldiers. I also had a hard time swallowing the hypocritical scene of a Mexican general arguing that the captured deserters should be considered as prisoners of war and therefore not be executed. The then Mexican president Santa Anna was not known for how well he treated his own prisoners of war. Example: How many heroes of the Alamo were allowed to live and tell their tale? The saying "Remember the Alamo" was created for a reason.

Embrace of the Vampire
(1995)

Interesting B-Movie
This is a B-Movie about some vampires wanting to bring the "chase" college coed Alyssa Milano into their fold. Being a heterosexual male with a normal dose of hormones, I found this movie very interesting.

Terminal Bliss
(1990)

Terminally Awful
This movie is possibly the worst I have ever seen, and I have seen a lot. It has been a few years since I saw the movie. I seem to remember there was a childhood murder and maybe another in the present day. What I remember most about seeing the movie in the theater was the audience groaning and yelling out how bad the movie was and literally throwing things at the screen in protest. In short this movie is not Terminal Bliss it is Terminally Awful.
