Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
(1984)

A whole lot of fun.
Steven Spielberg must have had a blast making this movie. It has adventure, it has romance, it's funny and horrific all at the same time. This movie is an adventure for the audience as well. Harrison Ford IS Indiana Jones. George Lucas and Steven Spielberg have created one of the most memorable characters in cinema history. The movie is breath-taking and although not as well done as Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade, it is still a great movie and definitely worth your while.

What Dreams May Come
(1998)

Felt I was watching a painting come to life.
This is the first time since Contact that I have seen special effects used to get a story across as opposed to them just being special effects. This movie is a major achievement for computer generated effects. Robin Williams plays a normal guy instead of his usual schtick. Everybody in the film plays their part with just the right amount of believability. It's always great to see Max Von Sydow and it was very interesting to see Werner Herzog even if it was in a bit part. I left this film with a sense of wonder and a sense of ease that there is a better place.

Spawn
(1997)

Just missed what they were looking for.
I watched Spawn one night late on video and I thought about how much better it could have been. The story is typical comic book stuff and there is not a lot of room for character development. John Leguizamo was great as Clown, but his humor was very childish and I felt like it was dumbing me down. Michael Jai White was very stiff and terrible as Al Simmons. The story may have not been very good but the special effects earn praises and were very well executed. The most terrible thing for me was watching Martin Sheen play a bad guy so badly. It's the worst acting I believe I have ever seen from him and it ruined the whole picture for me. I hope they get it right the next time.

Killing Zoe
(1993)

Slow
This movie plays very slow and can become boring and about nothing in places. Roger Avary is very talented, but this film goes nowhere. The violent climax seems unnecessary and like Avary put it in there because he had no confidence in his picture. Roger Avary may have helped Tarantino with Pulp Fiction, But he doesn't have Tarantino's control behind the camera.

Deep Cover
(1992)

Style but bad pacing.
I must admit that I wasn't with the critics on this one. This movie was so boring that I fell asleep twice and still didn't care how it turned out. I liked seeing Jeff Golblum in the heavy role, but the movie did nothing for me. It was very dark and moody but the characters were ultimately very boring. Don't waste your time.

Captain America
(1990)

Terrible.
This is a very sad excuse for a movie if I ever saw one. Very boring and very badly done.

Ricochet
(1991)

A lot of style, little substance.
Russel Mulcahy's Ricochet is a stylistic journey thru one man's worst nightmares. This movie has a ton of style and some very good performances. Denzel Washington's performance is very well done and Ice-T has some very nice moments as well. This movie belongs, however, to John Lithgow. Lithgow is the kind of actor that can do anything. He is very intimidating in this movie, even if more than once he goes over the top. The cinematography by Peter Levy is fantastic and Alan Silvestri's score has its moments. The movie's weakness is the story. It is just a typical revenge picture and the climax seems lifted from a horror picture. There is a lot of talent in this movie but the script by Steven E. de Souza is very weak. I would say check it out for the performances, especially Lithgow, and cinematography, but don't expect to get knocked out by originality cause this film doesn't have it.

Hard to Kill
(1990)

Steven Segal's best
This has to be Steven Segal's best motion picture. It reminds me of Bronson movies where the fights always seem exploitive. Steven Segal hasn't made a good picture since this one and I really don't think he ever will.

The Principal
(1987)

Great exploitation picture.
This is one of the best exploitation movies I have ever seen. The Principal is a great low budget action film and a lotta fun. Let me start by saying that Jim Belushi holds this picture together and Louis Gosset Jr. is great in the supporting role as a janitor or security guard or something. This movie is just fun. I mean Belushi has to deal with some crazy kids and does so in a harsh manner. I mean their only kids and he roughs them up like grown men in a bar fight. The climatic fight at the end is very entertaining and the director, Christoper Cain, builds up some great suspense. If you are in the mood for a great little action picture, check out The Principal.
