Lost in the Pacific
(2016)

Not fun, not thrilling, not even competent film-making
With a reported budget of $10 million, I wonder how much of that was just blown on the actors. Apart from a bunch of them parading aimlessly for 90 minutes and talking lines that don't amount to even a shadow of a story, there is nothing in the film that shows this budget. Worst of all is that we are presented with ridiculous monsters that look like black kittens - zero scares, zero thrills. Additionally, many of the actors seems to have genuine difficulty acting in English and would talk slowly or make exaggerated movements as they spoke. Painful to watch. I cannot understand why someone thought this sorry excuse for a story should be made into a movie but it was a mistake and the resulting product in terrible in every aspect. I very much discourage you from spending any money on this.

WALL·E
(2008)

A truly remarkable experience
Where to start? Wall-e looks so silly...a box with large binocular eyes and treadmills for feet. At first glance this seems little more than a childish escapade into science fiction for kids.

But if you stopped there you would be missing one of the most remarkable cinematic experiences you have ever had. For Wall-e is so much more than an animated feature, so much more than a little robot with an adventure, so much more than thousands of other similar stories that have appeared on screen before.

Wall-e is a tale of human stupidity. Its message cuts deep - greed and the ever-increasing want for comforts and easy living will destroy us. Wall-e is a tale of the value of life, all life, vegetable, animal, even robotic - and its connection with the planet that birthed us, the place we call home. Wall-e is a tale of resolve in the face of impossible odds, of awakening from stupor and taking action to restore our humanity. Wall-e is about a little square robot with big binocular eyes that shows us the power of friendship, of courage, of love. He shows us why we must never let go of our dreams and, above all, why we must always value our home.

The human expressions and gestures in Wall-e are beyond description. You could watch it as many times as you want and still be amazed at the sweetness, concern, fear, resolve, hope, and a hundred other emotions that flow through those mechanical eyes and limbs. He is truly alive, and what a wonderful gift for us that he is.

His obsession for grabbing Eve's hand will make you smile, his dance through space with a fire hydrant will make you laugh, his offering his life for the people's return to Earth will make tears come to your eyes, his childish but oh-so-human love for Eve will fill your heart with happiness.

Wall-e is a truly remarkable experience. It transcends entertainment and becomes magic. Watch Wall-e, let him fill you with his message, and go out there and be a better human to this Earth that needs you.

Star Trek: Nemesis
(2002)

Even-numbered Treks are best!
If you allow yourself a moment to gauge the past few Star Trek movies, you will notice that Treks number 5, 7, and 9 have been rather flat and overly dramatic. However, Treks number 6, 8, and now 10 are action movies which reach entertainment levels seldom seen in the franchise. Star Trek Nemesis is a return to good old-fashioned action science-fiction, with a well-written script, decent screen time for most of the crew, and improved special effects. A thoroughly enjoyable movie at all levels!

Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her
(2000)

Terrible, boring, depressing film
Unfortunately for this rather illustrious cast of women, the film's direction gets lost in the first few seconds of its beginning. From the first long, boring, and utterly useless scenes to the quick and painless ending, this is a movie about women with deep emotional problems and how they supposedly work them out. Unfortunately, the audience is shown sufferingly long slow scenes with plenty of tears and depressive dialogue and then a 5-second hint on how it all ended all right. This repeats itself over and over in all of the 'short stories' that make up this movie, and in the end you are left with no sense of significance, no answer to all the pointless sadness you have just witnessed. I am sure the director thinks this is all very deep, and I am sure the Cannes jury agrees (as it won a prize there), but this monologue is for art film aficionados only and for the rest of us it is so boring that we regret having spent that money on the ticket. Not even worth seeing on cable.

Mystery, Alaska
(1999)

Not good enough
It doesn't have enough laughs to be a comedy and it doesn't have enough character development to be a drama. So, this halfway comedy-drama centered on hockey does its best to please a general audience, but it really doesn't take off at all. There are genuinely funny moments and some pretty deep emotional ones, but the movie fails to draw the viewer into its fabricated world. I could not identify with the characters, I could not laugh with them, or even commiserate them. Also, for the enormous amount of sex jokes and sexual tension present throughout the movie, the film makers kept away from even a brief nude shot. That adds to the incongruencies of the movie's governing mood (there is none!) and confuses the heck out of anybody watching. I give it a 6 out of 10 just because Russell Crowe keeps the movie believable.

Resurrection
(1999)

Nothing new under the sun
If you have seen Seven, 8mm, and The Bone Collector, then very little in this movie will impress you. It is another run of the mill around depravity in connection with religious fanaticism. Nothing new there either. The plot, though, is intelligent, filled with surprises, some pleasant, and some stupid, and it makes the movie worth seeing at least once. Lambert is very good in his role but unfortunately the development is left hanging in the air as he discovers the killer's plan within the first 15 minutes of the film, and from there on is scene after scene of mutilated corpses and narrow escapes. The film gives gore fans plenty to hoot about. Otherwise, there is some foul language, violence, and a couple of nude scenes all related to dead men (not a nice part of the film). Overall, a 7 out of 10 on the first viewing, down to 4 on the second. So watch it once!

Shadow of Doubt
(1998)

Very bad law film
This movie had the ingredients for making it a good law thriller. The writers did manage to create a suspenseful atmosphere despite the laughable performance by Griffith (whose dialogue was even more boring than usual) and Berenger (who gives a no-hitter acting). But then, as it usually happens in bad thriller, after the bad guys have apparently won and thoroughly outsmarted the defense attorney, she get a colossal break of luck and wins the case. That is so typical of writers who run out of ideas that it is pathetic. And such a blunder of an ending puts a damper in the whole film, making it very very disappointing.

Time Under Fire
(1997)

Good premise, bad development
The premise is rather original and well thought-of, but unfortunately, siding a good story is very low budget that doesn't even allow for decent special effects. Jeff Fahey does his best amongst a poor cast, as does the always beautiful Linda Hoffman. They should make more movies together. The movie, while not worth much praise, warrants at least one viewing.

The Girl with the Hungry Eyes
(1995)

Could not have been worse
I give this horrible film 1 out of 10. Not only the acting is way below par, but the camera shots are often confusing and the changes in tone and color of the scenes are done without an apparent pattern or logic. It is marketed as a horror movie, but what little death there is it appears so fake it never goes beyond a cheap thriller. The 'girl with hungry eyes', a vampire that not once behaves like one, is kind of cute but spends the entire movie with too much badly applied makeup and her eyes look more deranged and loonie than hungry. I had to fast forward through some of the parts! Please don't watch this!

No Strings Attached
(1997)

Confusing
It has its moments, but very few. The thriller at times picks up and has some pleasant intervals of true suspense, but at the end it is just another crass attempt at an erotic thriller not well made. In fact, compared to some of the movies like Night Eyes or A Woman Scorned, this one is amateurish and the ending is so rushed that it leaves a big gap in the story. Only 4 out of 10.

Strip Search
(1997)

Not good enough
It could have been a good movie. The premise is interesting, and Pare is a good actor that holds his lines well. Unfortunately, everything about the cinematography was mediocre. The movie was based on a "tour" of strip clubs, and for the amount of depravity shown, there is surprisingly little skin, something that detracts from the allure. The film is filled with guns that hold unlimited ammo and with guys that can shoot 40 bullets from 2 meters away and never hit you. I saw it and enjoyed the action scenes, but I won't see it a second time.

Mirror Mirror 2: Raven Dance
(1994)

Not worth an hour an a half of your time
Very tepid horror movie, if you can even call it that. A tale about a mirror which is supposed to be evil but it does little more than emit weird sounds and drip some blood from time to time. There is scarcely any acting, and the only good thing I can think about the movie is that the dance scenes and the music were pretty cool, although far from good. I have never seen the first movie, Mirror Mirror, but it can't be worse than this one.

Crash Dive
(1996)

Pretty light action flick...
A movie to see if you are not in the mood for some heavy thinking. There is plenty of action, the usual amount of dead people, and some pretty decent special effects. The movie is your standard terrorist movie, although it has the twist that these terrorists are working from inside a nuclear submarine. Since large parts of the plot are not too believable, the viewer should watch this in a relaxed state, just to enjoy some adrenaline, and not pay attention to the odd things that sometimes happen (like the guy can swim faster than the sub or a laptop computer that melts like it was made of foam). All in all, enjoyable if you are bored.

Psycho Cop
(1989)

Oh, Boy, Give me more!
Great horror movie, with all the elements that a horror fan could ask for! The psycho cop himself is a work of art, as he is witty, has a death stare, and finds imaginative ways of killing his hapless victims. The rest of the cast also does a nice job, some behaving like morons, some like scared rabbits, and some like real men (and women). The effects are appropriate, there is a lot of blood, nicely filmed nudity, and the music is sticky and gloomy in a way that it makes your heart go faster for no reason at all. I wish they would make a third release of this movie, since it is a definite improvement over the first Psycho Cop flick.

The Nest
(1987)

Scary but too gross
I am the first to say that we need more good horror flicks. But, in my opinion, a horror movie has to have a balance between gross things and alluring things in order to keep the emotions of the viewer from swinging quickly into a state of disgust, which makes the movie worthless. The Nest has the first part down right: you got your mutant cockroaches that eat everybody in sight, two rather nasty animal killing scenes, and the cockroach queen that I think is a masterpiece of grossness. Unfortunately, there is no counterbalance: there is almost no comic relief, absolutely no naked babes, and no smart dialogues. The outcome is a pure terror movie that scares you, disgusts you, but doesn't leave a good after-taste.
