Made in Finland
(2022)

Great series! Can't wait to see more!
Absolutely amazing series! Tells the story about the first couple of years of Nokia mobile phones. Really riveting storytelling and super interesting backstory. As there is still so much more to the story of Nokia, I hope there will be more episodes soon!

Nothing Is Private
(2007)

Taking American Beauty one step further
I just stopped watching Towelhead and I have to say I am utterly impressed. It is dark and disturbing, but based in a comfortable surrounding. American Beauty without the humour and sarcasm. Just real emotions. So perplexing, confusing, challenging! An exquisite story all together.

I love these movies that present real, conflicting characters. Jasira's father is cruel and demanding, but as the viewer knows: with reason! The neighbour Travis is generally a benevolent person, but he still breaks the law. And most importantly the protagonist Jasira is sweet and innocent, but still provocative. Amazing acting by the entire cast.

Towelhead is Alan Ball's small masterpiece.

I wish I had a friend like Niko growing up!
I wish I had seen this a few years ago when I was going through something similar. This movie reminded me of what it felt like before all the pieces clicked together. Though Nico, the best friend, is a bit naive, it's still a great movie about friendship and on how tough it is growing up and realizing that you're gay. I almost didn't bare to watch at times, because the scenarios were so authentic. Especially the scene of the morning after and at the house of the older man just took me back in time. I really felt sorry for Dani, because he was too young and dumb in the way that even though he knew it could never happen, he still tried to pursue it. The acting is superb in my view, the boys really nail it. I only wish that I had had a friend more like Niko when I was growing up!

Two Weeks Notice

No more, I'm begging ya!
After seeing Maid in Manhattan, Sweet Home Alabama and a cazillion movies that could not resemble each other any further, I have had it up to my neck with these romantic comedies. God, are there no original ideas for movies left? Before seeing all this crap I was actually looking towards to Miss Congeniality 2 or the next part of Legally Blond, but now I hope they go straight to video instead of being number one at the box office. It's such a shame that talented actresses like Bullock, Lopez and Witherspoon (yes, you can argue about the talented part all you want) sell their souls for these mindless you-will-never-guess-what-will-happen-next projects. Please someone, do something if not original, then at least something with a twist. You would think these people would by now have enough ambition, experience and money that they could actually do movies that one might have to activate a few brain cells while watching. It's not even funny.

Serial Lover
(1998)

A pearl of French cinema
Though the title might imply the movie being a bad porn flick, it actually turns out to be yet another pearl of French cinema.

Claire's 35th birthday is coming up and she has strongly decided to get married. She invites three substantial grooms for dinner, with the goal of choosing one of them as her future husband. The evening doesn't go exactly as planned and as one thing leads to another; soon Claire's apartment has turned into a house of horrors as more bodies start piling up in Claire's bathtub.

This movie once again proves how better movies are made when profit is not the only goal to achieve. The story is absolutely brilliant! What makes the movie even more amazing is that it's set in one apartment and all the events happen during one night. It's one of those movies that when you come out of the cinema it feels like it lasted only half an hour, but in reality was an hour and a half.

Director/script writer James Huth has done a brilliant job in organizing everything so that everything works perfectly and the audience can't stop laughing. There are no unnecessary moments and every scene leads to another, even funnier one. And yes, do watch this one before they make the American version.

Sairaan kaunis maailma
(1997)

Freaking Beautiful World
Ipe and Papu are two messed-up 14-year olds from Helsinki. They work as small time LSD-dealers for a local drug lord, but the problem is that they boys seem to be using more than selling. Kalle gives them a last chance to pay him back by smuggling some drugs from Sweden. When the movie was first released it became as quite a shock to many, as it deals with juvenile narcotic use, a big taboo in Finland, as well as all other cultures. Ippe's mother is played by Kati Outinen, who later on won the best actress award in Cannes (for A Man Without a Past (2002)). It's a very realistic portrayal of a small Finnish subculture and for sure one of those movies that people will watch in the future when they want to learn about Finnish life in the late 90's.

Nadie te oye. Perfume de violetas
(2001)

A true eye-opener
I used to live in Mexico and this was definitely the best movie I saw there, and by far the best movie ever made on the life of the poor people of La Ciudad de México. Although Mexico to me is a very distinct place from the one described by the movie, it was shocking to see that these people living in true agony passed by the same places where I'd been and took the same bus as I did. It gave me a totally new perspective on my ride when I sat on that bus again the next morning. Life to most people on this planet is extremely cruel, but sometimes we seem to forget it, even if it's right beneath your very own eyes. Perfume de violetas opened my eyes; I think it would be good to remember that there are over 20 million people living in Mexico City, with the number rising by nearly 3000 every day, and that most people aren't even as well-off as Yessica, and definitely not as lucky as Miriam. Viva Mexico, eh!?!
