Cutthroat Island
(1995)

A great swashbuckler unjustly maligned by chauvinistic critics and uptights
Why oh why did this movie bomb? I thought it was exceptional fun, no more ridiculous than any of these testosterone pumped action films since Die Hard that the public sheepishly flocks to see. The stunts are amazing in their choreography, Davis and Langella are great, Modine is o.k. (he's getting kinda typecast as a smart aleck) and the movie accomplishes exactly what it set out to be...a pirate adventure of the greatest magnitude. We can only guess that joe-average-movie goer has gotten too cynical for pirate adventures since Polanski's Pirates and Harlin's Cutthroat Island were so senselessly trashed by el-pretensioso critics. If you want to be entertained...SEE THIS MOVIE! And for those who want realism in their action movies...well, GET REAL!

Tale of the Mummy
(1998)

So unconsciously horrible it'll probably end up a classic with 'Plan 9'
Having been disappointed with Universal's decision to make The Mummy a kinder, gentler mummy movie, I decided to check out MulCahey's Tale of the Mummy. I found it hard to believe that this is the same director responsible for the original Highlander. What wasted potential! I seriously have to question the sanity of anyone who says that this is a good movie. Maybe it's so HORRIBLE it's good, but it's definitely not a "good movie". While occasionally visually stylistic, the disjointed editing, "what-the-****?!" script, laughable effects, and poor performances had me feigning the whole "I think the tape's warped" routine the next day at the video store so I could get a replacement. So promising during the first 15 or so minutes and then SPLAT! like a watermelon at a Gallagher show! I felt really embarrassed for all the actors involved during the last half hour. Actually, rent this movie if you're in the mood for a good comedy...I guarantee the finale will make you rupture an organ or two! Check out my review at hollywoodbitchslap for further details...

Night of the Comet
(1984)

cheesy but fun 80's post-apocalypse movie
First of all, 2 glaring corrections:

1. 'Liquid Sky' is NOT an Aussie movie...it's an American film.

2. 'Liquid Sky' was released two years before NOTC, and has no thematic resemblance to the NOTC. I think the poster below me is thinking of a different movie, about a man who wakes up in Sydney to find himself seemingly the last man alive. Can't remember the name of it though.

Don't believe anyone who tells you NOTC is a disgrace...it isn't, it wasn't meant to be the uberartistic art-fag opus that many people for some reason seem to think everything should be. It's simply a cheesy 80's movie that centers around 2 valley girl sisters who decide shopping and listening to Cindy Lauper tunes will cheer them up after a comet turns the majority of the population into red ferrous-oxide dust, and turns most everyone left who isn't immune into flesh-hungry zombies...and any movie with zombies ain't completely bad. Face it people, we need more zombie movies, and this one's a toot. Not perfect by any means, but I'm proud to have it in my collection.
