While the City Sleeps
(1956)

rather deceiving
When you're gonna see a movie made by Fritz lang and starring Vincent Price and Ida Lupino , George Sanders and Rhonda Fleming , Dana Andrews and Thomas Mitchell you really think you re gonna see something else...well its not..The movie is OK and has very nice moments which shows the claw of Fritz lang and you enjoy to see those stars..but you are really not interested in the story which is quite unlikely if not quite stupid..and the choice of the very very dull Sally Forrest (a kind of under-Doris Day )spoils it all . Its not her fault but you dont put a white goose in front of such women as Lupino or Fleming , or with such Carnivorous as Price or Sanders.

La vie de Jésus
(1997)

Proletarian answer to the "Nouvelle Vague".
Around 1960 Truffaut Chabrol and theur friends stunned the world by simply filming the World around them without any message or morality . But they mostly filmed High and Middle French Bourgeoisis . This one is set far from the Cote d'Azur..But it is not a Ken Loach Movie..In British Working Class Films People Cry,Fight,Shout and Laugh...Here They Speak a Little but they dont say anything just because they have nothing to say..And when They Talk You hardly understand one word out of three..(atleast foreign audiences will enjoy the subtitles !)..This Movie is Rude and Harsh and send back to Noddyland all other so-called "no Future" Movies . Still there's a strange beauty if the filming of those northern areas close to Ruysdael and Dutch paintings.."La vie de Jesus" belongs to this kind of film you hate at first and that you keep looking and looking to understand why . An absolute Must for all Indies lovers .

L'auberge rouge
(1951)

just fine
French Best Humorist Fernandel was at His peak when he made this movie in 1951..he hated it and never spoke again to its Director Autant-Lara .. The Movie was a Smash but you can easily understand Fernandel's reaction..he is clearly upstaged by the much interesting couple of killers played by Rosay and Carette..The Movie is based on a true story and could be a very good thriller .

Le dernier tournant
(1939)

Postman started to ring in France
Its not widely known..but "le dernier tournant" has been the First Adaptation of James M Cain Novel 's "Postman always ring twice" and by far the best..Just watch France Greatest Actor Michel Simon play !! the movie came out immediately before Nazis occupied France and the Sensual Corinne Luchaire was sadly thrown in jail after 1944 because of her father's German sympathy...Still it is even better than the Visconti 'Ossessione so you musn't miss this one !

Nana
(1981)

close to zola
Very Good TV Movie ,Far better than the Christian-Jaque 1954 Movie and also probably the closest to Zola Novel..Unfortunately Veronique Genest is only a nice Nana but you really wonder why so many Rich Men destroy their lives for Her..I think most beautiful movie women would have been miscast in this role as those famous "Reines de Paris" all disappeared with WW1...Perhaps Greta Garbo could have played it.

Nana
(1955)

nice but soft
***SPOILERS*** ***SPOILERS*** Christian-Jacq offered his wife Martine Carol to play the Famous Prostitute of Zola Novel..It is true that those women (called "les Cocottes")really existed in the Gay Paris of the late 19th century .Some of them like Emmanuelle d'Alençon,Liane de Pougy or la belle Otero destroyed very wealthy tycons and pushed some of them to suicide..but they hardly looked like Martine carol who's just nice funny and gentle...and certainly not a deadly "femme fatale"..Sadly the end of the movie showing nana strangled by Muffat is really stupid..in the novel Nana is killed by syphilis.

Ulisse
(1954)

Better than School
I've seen this one when I was 10...40 years later I can assure you that I Remember every part of it and than it gives me (along with the stories of Moses Ben Hur Jason and Spartacus ) a huge success among the Children and teenagers who have no opportunity to hear such stories who have even more suspense blood and hot pursuits than an average Bruce Willis story ! i just don't care if the movie is a masterpiece or a B-serie : its certainly a fantastic story-teller and that's what it matters.

L'emmerdeur
(1973)

the nice hitman
This Movie came out in France after summer 73 and become quick one of the biggest hit ever in this country.. because it starred Lino ventura ,by far the most beloved french actor (although from Italian origin)in the funny character of a poor hitman who just cant do his job..people were delighted to see this tough guy annoyed by Jacques Brel although no one understood why he didnt strangle him at the third minute...But the incredibly bad acting by singer Brel makes this movie a never-ending bore. Strictly for Ventura Fans.

Sénéchal le magnifique
(1957)

Fernandel at his best
Fernandel has been during 30 Years France's biggest comic actor , challenged only by Chaplin in the States and Toto in Italy..Although now 30 years after his death his Melodrama movies like Angele,Nais, the Schpountz and the Don camillo series are best remembered, this straightforward comedy is absolutely a must..Its also a Movie on Theater actors harsh lives."all this for what ? to say in the poorest village of France : The Dinner is Served"....don't forget the last 15 minutes among the best of all french comic films

Maddalena... zero in condotta
(1940)

comedy at his best
This is definitely one of the best comedy ever made anywhere...In a Technical school girl students learn to write commercial letters to a Mr Doe in Germany...one day one of these letters is posted by mistake..the problem is that this Mr Doe really exists...The exquisite vittorio de Sica was a great performer before reaching stardom in 1946 with "the bicycle theft"...The movie is always charming ,never vulgar nor stupid and you really get off the movie theatre happy with yourself and life in general..Mussolini censors used Cinema to divert people in those black days...its is not the only movie of its kind but it is the best by miles..After 1960 Italian Directors like Fellini or Scola reacted strongly against this type of comedies..Now they dont seem to know how to make them anymore.

Morituri
(1965)

when a top German director looks at WW2
A Different Movie about WW2 mainly because of his cast..Bernard Wicki The Director is German, and has been widely praised for his other WW2 movie "the Bridge" also seen from the german side..the photography is exceptionnal, the man working easily in low key and in high key depending of the drama..the acting is something too : Brando is acting the way you expect from him ..he is less at ease with a tough german director than ,say, with lewis Milestone who had him in another Mutiny story 3 years before...this time he is clearly upstaged by Trevor Howard much more happy with a anti-actor's studio director..Yul Brynner didn't have the chance to play in good movies since "Magnificent 7" and was certainly happy to be cast in this one..The best Moment of the movie belongs to him : the radio just said that his son has sunk an enemy vessel.Everybody congratulates him.Someone grabs a navy book to know what this sunk ship looks like..in 5 seconds we see Yul's face turning from happiness to bitterness..the ship sunk was an Hospital Ship.

La minute de vérité
(1952)

the "qualité francaise at its best"
Morgan and Gabin where the mythical heroes of Marcel Carné's "quai des brumes"paragon of the pre-war poetic movies..(-you have beautiful eyes you know....-kiss me)..15 years later they're back...Morgan is 35 and one of the most beautiful Women of Paris..Gabin is 50 and plays a doctor..we are far from the lost souls of the 1939 movie...he discovers that she's untrue to him (with Daniel Gelin, the french answer to early Brando)...will she ruin her cosy "bourgeois" life to escape with a pennyless artist ?.....Everything is fautless..the direction of actors, the scenario, their actings, the settings....its the "qualite francaise" that dominates the 50s and which will be blown off by Resnais and the "Novelle Vague" in 59.

Passage to Marseille
(1944)

France before 1939
One thing really weird about this film is how it represents France around 1938...True Daladier who was then Prime Minister let the Nazis grab half of Tchecoslovaquia but he hardly could do anything else : all major powers(Germany , Italy , Great Britain , Poland (!) , Ungary) urged him to do so while USSR and the USA were clearly showing their no interest of the problem...But all those pacifists were certainly not pro-nazis as they all rush (with the notable exception of the Communist Party) to arms and declare war to Hitler on September 3,1939..Also very laughable is the attack of the Humphrey Bogard's newspaper...Nearly all of major newsmen in France understood the terrible consequences of the Munich treaty and if a lot of people were against the socialist and the middle of the road parties who were ruling France then, no one could express any sympathy to Germany ,the all-time enemy !....The Movie also seems to infer that France in 1940 were short of fighting soldiers...it isnt true..120.000 french soldiers were killed in action in 6 weeks prior to the Petain Surrender..this number shows definitely than French people in their huge majority were never pronazis..
