Finding Nemo
(2003)

Very good, engaging family movie
I took my three children, ages 2, 4 and 8 to see this film. They really enjoyed it - there was enough humor to keep them engaged and the bright colors and fun characters kept them watching instead of fidgeting as they do at lesser family fare. What I really liked were the little bits of adult humor sprinkled throughout. The kids found it funny, but the adults actually found it funnier. Disney and Pixar have once again created a fun family film that we won't mind watching over again in the years to come.

Magnolia
(1999)

Visually absorbing but pointless
While I did find this movie visually appealing and the characters interesting, I found the overall movie pointless, and it definitely felt like three hours to me! The ending made no real sense to me, and while I saw the connection between all the plotlines and characters, it wasn't as highly coincidental as they made things out to be with the opening vignettes. I was very impressed with the way Tom Cruise played his character, and the cast all fell very well into their roles, but by the end of the movie I didn't really care what was going to happen to them. So many questions were left unanswered for me that when the movie was over I thought to myself "What was the point of that?" I know many cinema buffs will disagree with me completely, but for an average movie goer I think an entire afternoon or evening could be much better spent than watching this film.

Signs
(2002)

Scary without being gory
I thought this was a great movie because it really scared me without being a gross out horror movie. I can't remember the last time I actually screamed while watching a movie. The plot is very sentimental, which I liked but some people may think is too much. I hadn't seen this movie on the big screen when it was out, which I wish I had, but watching it in a dark room at home didn't take too much away. If you're a sentimental person who likes being scared but not made ill by watching a movie, I would highly recommend this one.

Hey Arnold! The Movie
(2002)

Average kids fare
We saw this film as a sneak preview. My 7 year old son was mildly amused by the film, my 3 year old daughter was bored. It was pretty much a long episode of the TV show, which is cute but not one of my favorites. There were a few laughs but it was more the calibre of Doug's First Movie than other Nick films like Rugrats and Jimmy Neutron.

If your kids enjoy the show, they'll enjoy the movie. As an adult I could definitely take it or leave it.

Wet Hot American Summer
(2001)

Outrageous but very funny
I had read and heard a lot about this movie so I finally got around to watching it. A lot of it was pretty outrageous, but my husband and I both found parts of it hysterical, simply because they were so outrageous. If you want some mindless fun (and some that when you think about is really funny!) this would be a great pick.
