Jimmy Carr: The Best of Ultimate Gold Greatest Hits
(2019)

Odd
His one liners are funny but it's nothing but one liners. There is no story, no theme, no drama, nothing tying any of it together. It's just a non-stop fully automatic barrage of one liners. So it's funny at any one moment in time, but ultimately empty and hollow.

Beyond the Comfort Zone: 13 Countries to K2
(2018)

Unreadable subtitles
Who's idea was it to have white subtitles without a background in a documentary full of snow? 80% of the subtitles were almost impossible to read. I gave up after 25 minutes. Turned it off.

No Story
I can't believe I watched the whole thing. I kept holding out hope that something would happen. Nothing did. There is literally no story. For 90 minutes. And then it just ends.

Defending Jacob
(2020)

So boring
The worst thing about this painfully boring and overwrought show, aside from it being 90 minutes of story material stretched over 8 episodes, is that I couldn't possibly care less who killed Ben or if Jacob was guilty or not. It is so slow and boring that it took me a month to suffer through it, only coming back to it when I couldn't find anything else to watch. It may be the worst AppleTV show to date. I'm mystified as to why so many people liked it.

Westworld
(2016)

Cancel it
I absolutely loved Season 1. 9 out of 10 stars of more. I liked season 2 as well. But Season 3? Zero stars. Zero. I suffering through a little more than half the season before giving up on it entirely.

Dickinson
(2019)

A little uneven but enjoyable
Hailee Steinfeld is absolutely amazing and really endearing as Emily. You feel intense empathy for her by the end of the season.

Jane Krakowski seems miscast and I never really got used to it. It's odd how the teens all speak in present day vernacular (jarring the first time you hear it but then a lot of fun once you get it and roll with it) while the adults mostly speak in period correct modern English (okay makes sense) but not always (huh?). So the mashup sometimes feels forced or uneven. Like when Mrs. Dickinson says "punctilious" one day and "that's kinda my thing" the next. Or shoves cake in her mouth bare-handed. I mean it's funny, but also confusing. Is the Jane Krakowski character sincere or farce? Even by the end of the run I still couldn't tell.

But overall it's great. Emily is such a fascinating character that you can't help but love and feel empathy for. So sad and yet so inspired... carefree and yet captive. And I LOVE Lavinia. She is so funny and impulsive. The knitting gag had me bursting out laughing. And the Thoreau and Louise May Alcott scenes! OMG. Absolutely brilliant. Or the gag about having 5 layer of petticoats. Hahaha.

Anyway it's not perfect. And it's not a period piece. If that's what you want the you will hate it. It's not really fair to criticize the show for that. That's like criticizing Star Wars for not being Classical Opera. But mostly it's very fun and entertaining and endearing. I wasn't sure at first but by the 3rd or 4th episode I really loved it. There are moments of both laugh out loud comedy and genuine pathos. I think it may be the best of the AppleTV+ efforts.

Truly Horrible
This show is just horrible. And not because it doesn't make sense. I love the concept and I'm ok with things not making sense right away. It's bad because it's just boring and profoundly achingly pretentious. Every single moment is drenched in this overly earnest tone. It's suffocating. And the reversion to tribalism and mythology is just contrived and basic and not at all interesting. Just horrible. Took me 4 separate sessions to muddle my way though the first episode and I turned off the second episode half way though. See ya,
