What a beautiful episode. Aunt Bee scolds Andy for allowing Opie to hang around the jail. Opie wanders off and falls asleep in the back of a delivery truck. Opie confesses to several dangerous stunts. Andy realizes how important it is for Opie to spend time with him at the jail and decides to make the environment more suitable for Opie to strengthen their bond. What is amazing is how well Ron Howard acted. Timing was incredible. You forget Ron Howard had to memorize those lines. You forger he is acting. That storyline is still relevant today. There are more single parent homes today than the early 60's.
The Rabbit Who Ate Las Vegas," follows the team as they head to Las Vegas to rescue Professor Worfle, who has developed a winning gambling system but has disappeared. Hannibal comes up with another ridiculous plan. There is a very short scene where Hannibal dresses up as a Black waiter. The mobsters don't notice his clown make-up to look Black. Murdock jumps from under the cart Hannibal was pushing to assist Hannibal. Was Mr. T's acting so bad that the director chose to dress Hannibal up as a Black man?? There were only a few lines in that scene. Hannibal could have jumped from under the cart like Murdock and rattled off a few of his signature lines through his cigar. B. A. Calls two women 'mama' in separate scenes. The writers thought people talked like that in the mid 80s. Overall, it was an entertaining episode.
'When John Comes Marching Home' features one of the most popular Black sitcom actors, James A. Watson Jr. Playing Janet's ex-husband John. John is stationed at a nearby army base and comes back to reclaim his wife Janet and son Roger. Lamont doesn't put up any resistance and steps back, and Janet is gone. Sad episode considering Lamont wanted to have a family of his own. Not many funny lines in this episode. Adding Janet and Roger could have given Sanford and Son new life, countless new storylines. Actor James A Watson has also appeared on Good Times, Whats Happening!, The Jeffersons, Amen, Gimme A Break! Diff'rent Strokes, and 227.
