Shaka Zulu: The Citadel
(2001)

Insult to even associate it with the original
As a South African, it's an insult to think that someone was actually paid to produce this nonsense!

Despite the fact that the director was one of the writers for the original Shaka Zulu mini, this "addition" to the series is appalling! The original series was based on historical facts about a man who was a great strategist, leader and warrior. A man who played a large role in shaping the history of local tribes in South Africa.

The plot of this film, however, is nothing but hogwash, scraped from the bottom of the barrel by a writer that has failed to impress since the mid-nineties.

While Omar Sharif and Henry Cele are good actors, what is David Hasselhoff doing here, rescuing drowning slaves with his red buoy and bleached smile?

I kept expecting blond, busty women to appear out of nowhere and run across the screen in their tiny red bathing suits, for no apparent reason. Not that this would've been any more bizarre than the fantastical plot line that was probably dreamed up after 10 pints of beer at a fancy dress party, where someone's caveman costume inspired the writer to return to an African theme for his next "blockbuster".

Visual feast
In typical Japanese style the audience is left to wonder for most of the film, just what is going on. (The Japanese consider is insulting to reveal the purpose & plot early on in a film, which is probably why many westerners do not enjoy Japanese productions) The pace at times slows down, but not to the detriment of the story, so be patient: it'll all make sense at the end. As with most Japanese films, a second watch is worth it. You'll probably pick up some things you didn't notice during the first viewing. The fight scenes are excellent with the director borrowing from Chinese martial arts films, with the use of wire-work. Colour is used cleverly to highlight different themes, as well as draw attention to certain characters in various scenes.

Worth the watch
Though the series was canceled after just one season, it's still worth watching. The characters are believable & the acting convincing. The animation effects could've used some more work in some places, but in general, the creatures were done very well. The great thing about the series is that the audience knows enough of what's going on to understand where the storyline is going, while not knowing too much & thereby getting bored early on. Every few episodes, new questions arise about the amazing creatures as new aspects are revealed. Unfortunately due to it's cancellation, there are many questions about the creatures & various characters that will remain unanswered.
