The Climb
(2019)

A slice of life with a beautiful presentation
The biggest takeaway from this film is the presentation and the characters. The story revolves around two friends over the span of x amount of years. So the structure is divided into "chapters." With each chapter you see the main characters age, gain/lose weight. It would appear as if it were actually made in the span of a few years.

The way these chapters are presented is in one long take until the chapter ends. For example, at a Christmas get-together, you follow one of the main characters being welcomed into a house for a night of festivities. The camara will track the character from the exterioir of the house greeting every friend and family member. You are able to see whats happening by looking into the windows of the house, and it leads into said character going to the backyard to have a smoke. Theres alot of bicycling so the camara is always flowing, its rarely ever still. Brilliant presentation. The cinematography, for this reason, is outstanding.

The dynamic between the two main characters is so interesting. Think "you are the worst influence in my life and you stab me in the back many times... but you've also been with me for my lows and you are my best friend." Its very interesting to see how these characters get through life and you really start to feel for them.

I definetly recommend "The Climb"

Climax
(2018)

Bring the entire family to watch CLIMAX
This is a film worth watching atleast twice. I've seen it six times in total and it still gives me the unnerving feeling i felt watching it for the first time. So needless to say, this is a film i love dearly.

Gaspar Noe is a film maker who just always breaks the rules, he disregards the tradition of filmmaking. Credits in the end? Nope. He'd rather put it in the beginning and middle, and reveal the title of the film in the final frames. Decent camara work? Nope, we're going to spin and go upside down and not have a cut for almost 50 minutes. I love it all.

The premise revolves around a mystery person spiking the sangria with LSD on a dance party, and everybody attending this party unknowingly consumes who knows how much of this spiked sangria and have the worst night of their lives. The track shot follows every individual character as they try to get thru this nightmare. Some characters dance, some characters commit some horrific acts like breaking their own limbs and... alot worse.

The music is all this electronic techno house music, theres a DJ in this movie who also gets involved in this mess so thats where all the music is provided. Rollin and Scratchin by Daft Punk for example is used in this horrifying way that sent chills down my spine.

This film is divisive as hell, i think thats what Gaspar aims for. He knows his films arnt for everyone. So if you like seeing hypnotic dance sessions and people be stripped down to a primitive state of mind and commit horrific acts, watch this movie i love very much.

This Is England
(2006)

Humanity at its "finest"
This film has alot of views and takes that dont go so well with rationality, but i love that the film does not shy away from portraying how crude and messed up some people are capable of being. The biggest thing to take away from this movie is the characters and how developed they all are and how natural and real everyone feels. All the actors in this movie were great. The child character Shawn, Woody, Lol and Combo. They all feel like people you could possibly come across in your everyday life.

The cinematography wasnt bad. Alot of static wide shots of characters walking in slow motion. Mostly handheld when theres a group of characters hanging out, and face close ups when two characters are having a more serious disscusions.

The music is alot of fun as well. There was a raggae sounding track, and an acoustic instrumental folk sounding track. The composition was neat, nothing that really stood out however i appreciate how it was used in a very pivotal scene nearing the conclusion.

A unique take on a familiar tale
What took me to surprise is that this is also a musical. I enjoyed that aspect to it, but i didnt like all of the songs. Theres more that i liked than disliked, so it leans torwards the good side. Speaking of music, the sound mixing and design was very intricate. There'll be shots of a character smoking a ciggereate, for example and the sound of inhaling would be distorted or it'll be the focus. The mermaids themselves make interesting squeal-like sounds, to communicate or express the more animalistic aspects of their character.

The visuals are excellent. Its not too gory, but make no mistake it is there. The mermaid characters are intentionally portrayed as "savages" for lack of a better term, and as the title implies its a luring hunt. So make with that what you will. The bottom half to these mermaids look great. Its mostly alot of tail and not alot of fin. But it looks scaley and looks like it feels slimey, i was captivatated looking at it when it was on screen.

The story is hugely inspired by the original fairy tale of Little Mermaid, which is actually pretty dark and doesnt have a happy ending. It plays through with that aspect in mind, which i really liked. I would definetly recommend you check out "The Lure" no reason not to.

Finding Nemo
(2003)

Such an endearing classic.
If I were to explain Finding Nemo in one sentence, I would say, "Its about overcoming every obsticle life throws at you." Whats incredible about it however is that its an animated movie for children. It deserves so much more credit than just that.

The visuals of the ocean and it's creatures, Wow. It holds up 19 years later. What a beautiful, vibrant movie to watch. Every single character looks so distinct and unique they all stand out from each other. For the most part the movie is set in the ocean where it actually feels like the ocean, unlike some other animated fish ocean movie.

To elaborare more into my one sentence review, every character has something to overcome internally and in a way, find themselves. Marlin has to overcome his fear of the ocean, Nemo has to overcome his self doubt, Gil has to contemplate the extreme lengths to escape his perdicament, Dory proves shes just as capable as any other fish. The themes go hard for being just a movie for children, which is why I think anybody of any age can find something to latch onto here.

Also, the movie is very funny. I found myself laughing alot when I watched it now as an adult, and I've seen this movie often when I was a child.

Regarding the score composition, I especially love the theme "Nemo Egg (Main Title" "Gill" and "News Travels"

Suspiria
(2018)

A remake worth the praise
I've seen this movie three times now, and even still this movie will make me wince and feel uncomfortable in a few very spectacular stand out scenes. Upon my third rewatch, i particularly found the scene of one of the characters observing her environment with the context of whats actually occuring during their dance practices. The expression on her face is gut wrenching for me.

I enjoy the sound design and mix of this film so much. When characters are interacting in the dance practice room setting, you constantly hear an echo when they delivered their lines, matchiching their setting which is a large empty room. During dream sequences you can hear whsipering and other creepy sounds coming from all sorts of direction.

Speaking of character interactions, its striking how they portray these drawn out scenes of a group of characters laughing, enjoying dinner, but the dialogue you hear (or read because subtitles) is refering to sinister occurances about to take place.

Tilda Swinton gives an amazing performance, she gives it her all in every single scene. Thats all I'll say about that.

Definetly check it out if it looks interesting to you.

Thor: Love and Thunder
(2022)

Forgettable at best, empty at worst.
I had alcohol during the movie, and I was a bit high as well.

Theres several attempts for humor. I dont know if im just tired of the marvel type of humor. But I did not laugh once. I don't think the movie made me feel anything other than an hour or two is going by.

The romance is there, for some parts its portrayed in a "rom-com" movie like when they're doing comedic outdoor activities and what not. I can detect the endearment in that, it just did nothing for me.

The action is there, you get a medium shot, a wideshot, slow mo. Flashy colors and such, all that is just fine nothing special at all.

The settings are visually interesting. Theres a location with lots of golds and yellows, so the character's blue, green or purple outfits contrast with that. The most interesting setting was a greyscale location where sources of light will reveal color. That was fun to look at.

The soundtrack containing the licensed songs are just fine if you like 1980's rock music. Score composition was barely noticable until the final 20 minutes.

Theres two giant screaming goats characters who are basically plot devices. The screaming becomes obnoxious after a while.

The Black Phone
(2021)

Slightly intriguing at best, forgettable at worst.
The first 20 minutes really dragged for me, it didnt become enjoyable until the main antagonist is introduced and it "becomes" a horror movie. There are three jumpscares involving incredible loud music cue sounds, but nothing extraordinairly shocking of value. The main child character starts off rough to watch but he eventually grows on you, when he has to remain a composed demeanor. The other children characters, like his sister, could get annoying to watch, but thats my opinion. Cinematography was nothing to special, except for certain shots when main child character is trapped in the basement and the shot would spin around said character while hes talking on the telephone.

Glad I saw it, won't care or remember to rewatch it.

Hausu
(1977)

Its so weird and memorable.
This movie is one of the weirdest movies I ever seen. The editing is so spuratic, the screen would split or overlap, and sometimes footage will be reversed. All that said, its so fun and takes such unexpected turns, it becomes surreal. Love it so much 10/10. The soundtrack is also really good. It has a theme, and its used several ways to convey different emotions. Theres also the songs that have lyrics, those are such a good vibe to have a night time drive with.
