Horrible Bosses
(2011)

So surprised by this movie
I do not usually watch movies with SNL actors because the scripts seem mass produced (could list so many examples) with about as much skill as meat grinding, but I slummed it about a month ago. This is far more the caliber of Bridesmaids than Mr. Deeds. All the actors work brilliantly together and it was so witty and fresh that I did not want it to end. Even though Jason Bateman plays the same character in most of his comedies his timing is great and he is always funny. I laughed hard and loudly so I am glad I didn't see it at the theater. Yes, there are some corny and preposterous bits of luck as with all of these kinds of movies that I used to avoid but this one is worth it. Jamie Foxx has several scene stealing moments. This is a great movie for any weekend but if you are desperate for some pandemic levity and stress relief, make sure to put this on you list-even if you are a movie snob!

The Imposter
(2012)

Gripping...you will wish you still had it to look forward to when it is over
This is the most compelling and ingenious blend of storytelling and docu-narrative techniques undergirding a stand-on-its-own-merits fascinating missing persons case. Truly, the chain of events unrelated to the case....I stop there. The less you know the better your experience and I won't be the one to cheat you. Do not look it up. I went in blind and within 15 minutes I was contacting people and telling them to watch it, all of whom reported back with the same rapturous praise. It has continued to age well and you can see its influence in a wealth of post-2012, post-Imposter documentaries. I found myself rooting for the unreliable narrator. The questions were left to the viewer with the exception of the driving force behind all of it which you will come to long before it is presented. You will also be left with many more and be thinking about this for days if not years afterwards. I have never forgotten it. Watch it now. I hate this phrase but it truly applies here: You're welcome. Enjoy.

Don't F**k with Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer
(2019)

Fatuous ending to a solid documentary-only minor possible spoiler
Every documentary wants to leave you with compelling, unanswered questions...and if you want to see the masterclass in this goal you must see Imposter. This documentary tells a horrifying yet compelling story about a group of people who become hell-bent on discovering the identity if a psychopath who tortured cats on youtube. John (no last name) and "Baudy Moovin" (the latter is a totally unreliable narrator and, I hate to say it, unlikeable as well) take us through their journey and, though it consumes them, I am not sure if they really had an impact on the outcome, maybe "we saw it first" bragging rights? It is clear that John does not feel like he needed BM, who was a stranger to him, to have accomplished what he did and he was inarguably much more logical, ingenious and tech savvy than BM (who works in technology.) I am not even sure he respects her and implies it at one point, which was awkward and funny. I did not believe her personal story of a close encounter. Searching for that compelling question, the writers/directors etc. tack on a lazy, last minute question asking us if we are complicit in allowing the psychopath or all psychopaths to be successful. It views as an affront and an obscene gesture at the audience who is only complicit in unintentionally making two arrogant would-be avengers have a more inflated estimation of their own worth and caused (look at the other reviews) the audience to both roll their eyes and regret watching. You can't disrespect your audience like that, they always have the last say. The ending is rushed and instead of such an irrelevant and sophomoric question being lobbed at us, they were free to address any of the myriad of unanswered questions they left. It feels abrupt, as if it was a school project at the end of term and, burnt out, no longer cared about the grade or finishing.

I cannot recommend it; there are repulsive parts that even being alluded to left me feeling exploited and again, the audacity of Baudy Moovin wanting our attention and then trying to get us to share her shame is pathetic. Watch The Woman Who Wasn't There or Imposter instead.
