Halloween Kills
(2021)

Why can't films stick the landing?
A truly brutal and cruel entry in the Halloween franchise, Halloween Kills is really trying to do too much, and needlessly. Okay, bring back characters from the first film and offer them up as potential victims of Michael Myers, I'll go with that. Even though why would that nurse Marion Chambers want to hang out with a bunch of Michael Myers survivors, especially if in this reboot Halloween II never happened? And why not, Halloween II was great and could have easily fit into this reboot storyline. Next, focus on mob rule in the wake of the January 6th attack on the capitol, okay. But that part of the story gets tired really fast with the mob scene at the hospital, which really had nothing to do with Michael in the end. Then take Laurie Strode out of the story for the most part, except for her recovering in the hospital and making speeches, I think not. Jamie Lee Curtis may not like horror movies, but she's the backbone of this series and she gets short shrift in this one. Another oddity, apparently Michael took martial arts lessons because he was able to kill a dozen or so firemen, even though most were armed, and then does the same to a mob at the end which is completely nonsensical. And I hope there is a director's cut coming because the end of this version of the movie absolutely sucked. I won't go into it to avoid any spoilers, but was that last kill even real, and if so, what disrespect to that character. And here's a thought for Laurie Strode. If you're traumatized by Michael and constantly living in fear of him returning, maybe don't stay in Haddonfield? How about a move to Hawaii, work on a farm or something, and put an ocean between you and the Shape? It's not like Michael could get plane tickets! But there is apparently a third film in this reboot trilogy, so I hope that one does a better job of closing out the story because Halloween Kills was a mess and left me cold.

Awake
(2021)

I can take it or leave it
This film definitely has its moments, but it does a HORRIBLE job of setting up why people can't sleep in the first place. It seems so odd that they just start talking about no one can sleep without setting up what could have caused this. There are some recognizable actors involved and the camera work is pretty good, but hands down the best part of this movie is the young actress who plays Matilda. She is fantastic. Gina Rodriguez just does Gina Rodriguez and the son kind of looks like a less psycho Latino son from the first season of Fear The Walking Dead, but otherwise I was lackluster towards this film. It's not terrible, it's not great, it just is.

The Great Silence
(2020)

Contagion this is not!
If you're looking for a smart, engaging, thought-provoking movie about a pandemic skip this movie. It is slow, pointless, confusing and annoyingly vague about what's going on here. So the girl gets sent on a plane to stay with her boyfriend's family, but oh, she's from there too? Why is her dad such a crazy a-hole? Why are they forming a militia and shooting soldiers? She's attacked and stabs the guy, but then she's injured too? How? Is she sick at the end or just injured? Why did I spend an hour and a half waiting for this movie to get interesting and it never does? This seems like such a vanity project as the writer also starred in the movie, but is it a star turn if it bores the hell out of the audience? I've seen council meetings on C-SPAN that were more interesting than this waste of time. Too bad because the set up was good and it's incredibly timely, but then it goes down the toilet fast. Watch Contagion or the documentary 76 Days if you want a good pandemic movie. Hell, even Outbreak with Dustin Hoffman and Cuba Gooding Jr, whose better than Ben Affleck, is more entertaining than this drivel.
