Phat Girlz
(2006)

Good fun
Look, this obviously isn't the best movie ever, and it was obviously a TV movie, but it's FAR from the worst I've ever seen. It's meant to be silly, but it does contain a good message: your worth shouldn't be based on your weight or outwardly appearance , and even if you're on a fitness journey, you shouldn't feel as though the way you are now isn't worthy of self respect and love.

This movie is always one I watch with friends or my mom when we feel like watching something that doesn't require much thinking. We find it quite funny, it's hard not to like and laugh at Jazmin and her friends antics! :)

Red Dead Redemption II
(2018)

Incredibly sad and moving story
Wow.

It took me two years to finish this game. I remember I would start up the prologue and found Colter boring, so I never went beyond this chapter believing the entire game would be this slow. I finally gave the game a third chance in November and I'm so glad that I did.

This game truly saved my life. That statement might make some people roll their eyes, but in 2023 I was in a dark place, and playing and dying as Arthur made me realise I had to do better if I wanted to get out of the rut I was in. I related to Arthur's dislike of himself. It made me realise I'd taken life for granted I guess.

I finished the game and I still think about the story all the time. It's truly a masterpiece and I think it's honestly a game everybody should play at least once in their lives.

Barbie
(2023)

Didn't meet my expectations
I wanted to love this movie but it just wasn't it :(

It was nothing that hasn't been done before. It didn't really say anything. I hate using the word woke, but hearing the same talking points is tiring. We understand, the patriarchy is bad. But I didn't go to this movie to be preached to.

I was hoping it would be a bit more camp. I was expecting it to be like the Barbie animated films you get, which ngl, are usually good. This was far from that.

The ending was also a bit dragged out. It was trying very hard to be profound and it wasn't working.

I didn't care for any of the characters much either and was a little sad to not see Raquelle or any of Barbie's sisters apart from Skipper.

Apart from the criticism, I thought the costume design was really well executed. Margot Robbie looked fabulous at all times.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves
(2023)

Man, our reality is so boring.
So I went into this movie not really knowing anything about Dungeons and Dragons. I always knew it was a game and that's where my knowledge ended. So my expectations were low, I wasn't sure what to expect and I was dreading I'd find it boring due to me expecting it to be like the typical viking fantasy sort films/series you get (eg. The Last Kingdom), and wondering how they'd translate a game into a film.

Well I'm glad I gave it a chance. It really exceeded my low expectations. The immersion and world was great, the humour was clever and self-aware but it wasn't overdone to the point it became boring, all the cast had great chemistry and every character was likeable, good or bad.

I left the film thinking about how boring our reality is. How dull that life we have to live our lives doing the regular 9 to 5.

Definitely give this a chance.

Knock at the Cabin
(2023)

Stupid movie.
One of the most boring and predictable horror movies I've watched in awhile, and that's saying something since I've watched Piranha 3D and Zombeavers recently. At least the former two I've just mentioned are so ridiculous they're funny, the same can't be said for this. The beginning of the movie honestly made it seem promising but it went downhill quickly after that. Horrible script, not much better acting, ending made no sense, lots of stalling to make extra screen time. No explanation to why these people we're responsible in saving the rest of humanity, why anyone had to die yada yada. Just skip this one, I'm annoyed I spent the money I did on it.

28 Days Later...
(2002)

The first horror movie that really managed to move me
I've watched plenty of apocalypse movies, yet none of them have ever moved me like this one has. The intro was a bit stupid so I was put off, but I'm really glad that I continued to watch it. You really get a sense of hopelessness watching this movie, it makes you ask yourself questions like "What if this happened to me?" "What would I do in such a situation?"

Everything about it is just brutal, and yet I fear it would be realistic if it ever happened in our world. It shows that humans are naturally selfish, but naturally they want to help one another at the same time. I wouldn't have been so trusting of strangers in such a situation...

The Jeremy Kyle Show
(2005)

Exploiting the lower classes
I used to like this show when I was young, and God knows how, because I find it hard to watch now. It was a horrible show that exploited the lower class for cheap entertainment.

These people are not inherently bad, they were born into their backgrounds through no choice of their own, and instead of this very wealthy country supporting them and providing the opportunity to grow, it instead chooses to humiliate these people on national television. Classism is a massive problem in this country, it's a shame how normalised it actually is.

I am glad it's off the air. Shame on ITV for ever allowing and investing in this program in the first place.

Muriel's Wedding
(1994)

Good film, and I liked it, but
I agree with another review that this is a unique film, I've never seen anything like it really.

I ended up watching this with my parents. I honestly found this film quite depressing but I suppose it's meant to be. I left feeling a bit conflicted. It's depressing as much as it is a comedy.

I did see myself in Muriel in some ways. I'm not so much of a bridezilla, but I understand how it is to be a bit of an outcast and have bad friends. But again I thought one of the points of this film was to show her dreadful father and siblings were keeping her down until she moved to Sydney: only then did she manage to do well for herself.

Very sad fate for her mother too.

We could all do with a friend like Rhonda though.

JoJo & Gran Gran
(2020)

I enjoy this show as an adult.
A lot of kids shows these days are too fast paced for me and make little sense, but this one is a gooden. I also have used Gran Gran's house as inspiration for decorating my own home. Who'd have guessed I'd use a kid's show for that? Not me, but I'm not mad about it.

SpongeBob SquarePants: Nature Pants/Opposite Day
(1999)
Episode 9, Season 1

I love the episode "Nature Pants"
Gets me right in my feels. Very heartwarming episode all around, especially the group hug at the end. Can't beat classic Spongebob. Friendship really is a wonderful thing!

Green Book
(2018)

How can you not love this movie?
Such a lovely, feel good film. Emotional right where it needs to be. It's become a Christmas tradition to watch it in our house. It will have you laughing out loud and crying the next minute.

However it does show that love comes easier to humans than hatred ever does. One love to all. If you haven't watched this I couldn't recommend it enough.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid
(2021)

Not amazing, not awful.
Obviously this will never live up to the first three films (we don't speak of the fourth,) but it was alright. No risks were taken, but it's hard to with such a format and book. My issue with this is that the character illustrations in the book don't work outside of 2D drawings. And I'm not sure if this was just an issue on my end, but did anyone else notice Greg's mom's voice went muffled and grainy at times?

Also this film doesn't remain in the time the books were published. Sure, social media existed in 2007, but middle-schoolers sure weren't on it as much as they are now. And they wouldn't as commonly have had mobile phones.

I don't know, all I suspect is that this was just a low-budget money grab. Kind of destroys the legacy of the books and the original films.

A Puppy for Christmas
(2016)

Only watched this because my grandma watches no end of rubbish.
Bang average everything. Acting wasn't that good, seen better acting from the drama club in my university. Genuinely can't understand why my grandma enjoys this. Thank God I'm British because American television looks rubbish.

Muppets Haunted Mansion
(2021)

Just Meh.
First thing I noticed was Kermit's voice. It wasn't like his normal one. I didn't really understand what was happening in this film, felt like there was no story. Bang average.

Love Island
(2015)

Get this tripe off the television!
I will never understand how anybody who is remotely intelligent can watch this program! I've tried, it's absolute drivel- switched channels within minutes. Several deaths from it and yet it is not taken off the air. VERY disturbing that young people would prefer to have 15 minutes of television fame than to actually work for a fulfilling and rewarding career.

Come Outside
(1993)

Reminds me of childhood and my nana :)
I've watched this from a young age. My nana used to play it on the VHS player. Me and my dad still watch it when we have nothing to do. This show will always hold a place in my heart. Definitely one to show the kids.

Horrid Henry: The Movie
(2011)

Masterpiece
Absolutely mint movie. Cheers me up and gives me a laugh when I'm feeling down. Don't understand adults on here complaining about acting skills. I mean what did you expect?

Seeing Noel Fielding was a nice surprise too.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
(2007)

Clearly made to be watched in cinema
Good film, again not entirely faithful to the books, but constantly had to turn the volume up and down because it was either too loud or too quiet. My arm aches from constantly using the remote for two hours.
