Star Trek: Picard
(2020)

Just nope
2 of 10, and that is not a review bombing by a dissatisfied fan. It's one star for each episode I managed to make myself watch to the end.

It's simply bad. Another uninspired safe formulaic show they slapped star trek title on in an attempt to milk as much as they can from the remaining fandom.

Beforeigners
(2019)

Unconvincing
I am genuinely surprised by so many positive reviews of this show. I barely got it through the first episode. The acting, the premise, the plot, everything felt totally rushed and unconvincing I'd rather watch that show where they give a 12 year old child a badge and let him fight crime.

Westworld
(2016)

Devolves into bs
I really loved the first season. It was a bit "twisty" (don't know how to describe it better without it being a spoiler) but you could watch it from the beginning to end and say "aha, cool". With season two they just overdid it to the point where most people can't just watch the show and understand what the hell is going on. Instead only people who understand what's going on now seem to be those who are ready to re-watch every episode, share ideas on the forums, draw diagrams about who did what where and when... If you like that David Lynch type stuff where everything is so convoluted you have to do research on every scene in order to figure out what's going on, you'll love this. If you want just a fun sci-fi show to watch, there's nothing for you here.

Annihilation
(2018)

One giant plot hole with a bit of fun sticking out here and there
This movie barely kept me from quitting half way through, and I really rarely quit movies half way through. It has some interesting visuals, there are bits of fun here and there, but overall narrative is just incoherent mess to the point where I have to wonder what were the people who thought it was a good idea on. From the characters that are totally undeveloped and basically have no personality at all, to the sciency techno babble that has zero internal logic it's all just bad. Don't waste your time or money on this one.

Battlestar Galactica
(2004)

Starts really strong, goes to hell
Problem with IMDb reviews is that they go for the whole show, not the individual seasons. This show starts really good. I'd give it a 8 or 9. Then it all slowly dwindles down into quite incoherent mess and ends up with a disappointing finale with a bit of Lost syndrome. It's overall worth watching but it will leave you with a bitter taste at the end.

Blade Runner 2049
(2017)

Goes through all the motions of a good movie but has no meat on it
As someone I know said, this is a "cargo cult movie". It has all the exterior of what a great Blade runner sequel would look like but there is little underneath.

Visuals are stunning, music and sound are good, camera work is as it should be, but when you get down to its core, there's little there. I am not usually the one to complain about a slow pacing or a plot that requires some suspense of belief, but here It seems they serve as a way to achieve the deep and philosophical feel without actually being either. Acting overall is mediocre at best, actors fail to convincingly relay emotion of the characters, that are themselves written quite shallow, unrelatable and one dimensional. There are some interesting questions raised by the plot, the whole thing is far from a total disaster, but nothing is explored deep enough or clearly enough to be truly interesting or engaging. That's why this movie is going to be remembered just as a sequel to it's famous original.

Alien: Covenant
(2017)

Makes Alien resurrection seem like a masterpiece
As I'm concerned, this is not a movie at all. This is a shitload of CGI slapped over an excuse for a story. And a bad excuse it is.

I am all for the suspension of belief, and will not usually complain about plot holes as much as some people, but this plot is one big plot hole. Supposedly well trained astronauts act like mindless panicked civilians, go about a strange planet with organic life without any protection, ignore any quarantine protocols, ignore basic safety measures and endanger lives of thousands of colonists to radio their spouse etc. Interstellar ship gets damaged by a random sun flare like those kind of events are totally unknown to engineers of the future, random radio transmissions from a distant planet get picked up by chance... It's a mess.

The characters themselves are totally flat, to the point where any emotional impact of their situation is totally lost. Guy gets eaten by alien? Well at least it looked kind of pretty.

Talking about aliens, they tried to put aliens from Prometheus and old style aliens in the same movies, making both kind of pointless.

Scenes themselves look very good, but that's the only positive thing that can be said about them. Bad acting, horrible story and the lack of finesse makes it all feel kind of empty and uninteresting.

All in all, you'll spend much better time watching first two movies for the 1000'th time then watching this cr*p. You'll even have better time watching Alien resurrection then this. Avoid at all costs!

Vikings
(2013)

Awesome start but gets quite bad later on
First two seasons of the series are very enjoyable. For the first two seasons I'd give a 9 or a 10. Problem is, starting with season 3 things slowly start to go downhill.

It feels like actors ran out of ideas so they started filling the time with pointless irrelevant drama, characters progressively get more and more irrational and unconvincing, and it all gradually becomes less and less fun.

Introduction of Alyssa Sutherland to the show is a colossal mistake as she simply put can not act, resulting in a very shallow and irritating character.

Black Sails
(2014)

Looks good but does not develop into much
First of all, for the good bits. It's a pirate themed TV show with the nicest production I've seen so far. It looks great, cast is decent, nothing to complain at in that regard.

Problem with the show is, after a season or two, you realize that the show has a way of chasing it's own tail, not moving a bit from the premise it has started at. Things do change, characters do evolve, but only on a superficial level, while most of them actually seek something just to have that something taken away at the last minute and being forced to seek it some more.

Probably the most disappointing part is the ending, which basically makes everything characters did for the last few seasons totally irrelevant.

Don't take me wrong, I've watched the show all the way through. It has moments when it really shines, but don't get your expectations very high.

The Walking Dead
(2010)

Meh
This show is fun at times. Fun enough to get me watch it for seven seasons. Production is at a reasonable level, acting is OK.

It has many problems though. First and most irritating is chaotic pacing, inconsistent storytelling and some rather bizarre story arcs. It often feels like producers have no idea what they are actually doing, but will try a bunch of things until something sticks. We will have few decent episodes, then we'll get few horrible filler episodes in which some group member decides to have an existential crisis in a most unconvincing way and do something irritatingly irrational.

Sense8
(2015)

J. Michael Straczynski scores again
I know Michael Straczynski as an old school sci-fi era, and I was wondering how well he would do with a more modern sci-fi show. For me at least, he nails it perfectly.

During the first season, Straczynski takes his time toying with the show's premise, exploring the characters, their pasts, their personal issues, relationships and connections, while the main plot develops at a bit slower pace then we're used to in modern shows. Result is a sense of richness, both regarding the characters, the setting and the multitude of side plots that unravel. Show never gets too serious, too philosophical or too dark. There is always a light humorous overtone, but it never gets ridiculous or unbelievable.

Production is overall on a much higher lever then I expected, acting is good, and all in all, I can say it is one of the better shows I have stumbled upon in the last few years.

Highly recommended.

Helix
(2014)

Fun
I watched the first season until the end. I'm definitely not fascinated, it's never going to be my favorite show. Some events are unrealistic, some characters react in a way "real humans" wouldn't (but then again, it is still unclear how much of that is just bad writing and acting and how much will be explained later on). Still, every episode was interesting and fun to watch.

Sure, there are moments when they watch a virus under a microscope or create miracle drugs in days by mixing few flasks of colored liquids, but if you can let go of the expectations of realism for the sake of fun, I recommend this show.
