Esperança
(2002)

Had some good moments, but...
***MILD SPOILERS*** In the start, it was just another romantic story, but it was getting better at each episode. The story of Italian lovers Toni (Reynaldo Gianecchini) and Maria (Priscila Fantin), was like Romeo & Juliet - with a detail: they don't die. But become separated when Maria's father Giuliano (Antônio Fagundes) obliges the girl to marry a rich man - Martino (José Mayer). She's expecting a Toni's baby - but now he's too far, on Brazil. A lot of things happen, and Toni gets married to a rich Jew, Camille (Ana Paula Arósio). And the story gets even better since this moment. We have some great characters like Maria, Camille, but, in my opinion, none of them are better than Genaro (Toni's father, a brilliant pianist), wonderfully played by Raul Cortez. We also have a "Moulin Rouge relationship" between prostitute Justine (Gabriela Duarte) and soon to be a lawyer Marcos (Chico Carvalho). But when the author changes - Benedito Ruy Barbosa gets sick and Walcyr Carrasco start writing the story since episode #150 - the story gets really bad. A lot of unnecessary scenes, strange events with no explication, and we discover that some characters are the villains - and they were the heroes. It could be wonderful - if it didn't change so much.

Veja Esta Canção
(1994)

If you like emotion and reality, watch
Beautiful, wonderful, sometimes shocking and true. Great movie, like every movie directed by Carlos "Cacá" Diegues. Four touching stories, from living in danger to a different type of love, passing by the prostitute. The stories have a song that gives their name, for example, "Drão" from the Gilberto Gil's song with the same name (also wonderful). Because of this, the movie is named "Veja Esta Canção" (See This Song).

Great cast, that acts a lot, with great actors and actresses like Fernando Torres, Fernanda Montenegro, Pedro Cardoso, Débora Bloch, Floriano Peixoto, among others. The great production of Zelito Viana helps to make of this a small masterpiece. I strongly recommend this movie if you like a different type of love (not that romantic view from Hollywood movies, I mean love in the real world), the reality put on the screen at a shocking, even cruel way, and good music.
