The Bucket List
(2007)

Disappointing
I was expecting a lot more from a great director and two excellent actors. I guess Nicholson and Freeman could only do their best with what they were given.

The commercials looked pretty good and I was thinking it was going to be quite a comedy/adventure movie with the required drama about illness and death. I found it bland and flat with only one real moment of laughter when I thought, "Wow, that was a great line." I don't normally look for inconsistencies with continuity and such, but I knew this movie wasn't holding my attention enough when I realized I was noticing errors and poor work. A close up of a family photo shows THE WORST Photoshop job ever, and when a shot is taken of the view of an ocean, it's a still shot. The water isn't moving. How pathetic.

Going in, I thought this was going to be *the* movie to see. I'd wait for the DVD.

The Muppet Christmas Carol
(1992)

The best version of the classic story - ever.
What can I say? I love this movie. I'm a big fan of the Muppets to begin with and I've been enamored with it since the first time I saw it. Michael Caine is absolutely superb as Scrooge. He's so dark and nasty that the music and dancing and singing of the other characters is necessary to balance out the mood of the movie.

Every time I see it I am touched by the suffering of the Crachit family in their future without Tiny Tim, and by Scrooge's transformation. The change in his face and demeanor is just beautiful to see.

This was a well-produced movie. The sets and costumes and overall feel of it were just excellent.

Very highly recommended. It's not just for kids!

Quintuplets
(2004)

I like it!
I've seen a few episodes now, and I think it's funny. There's some good writing in there, lots of good laughs.

So what if the quints aren't identical? It's not impossible to have fraternal quints. Unlikely, but so is having quints in the first place!

The most recent episode I saw (where they're trying to get a new van) was hilarious. It was great to see Bob ("Bulldog" from "Frasier") guest starring as their competition.

I look forward to seeing more episodes. I enjoy everyone in the cast. Each of the kids is quite a character! Give it a shot, you'll be sure to have some laughs. Great new series.

Cold Mountain
(2003)

Very moving
I really enjoyed this movie, and was quite surprised to see so many negative comments posted here. I thought everyone in the cast did a fantastic job. I was especially moved by the depth of emotion presented by both Nicole Kidman and Jude Law. It was heart-wrenching and touching. I really enjoyed the comic moments with Renee Zellweger and Philip Seymour Hoffman. They were hilarious!

I would recommend this movie if you're in the mood for a deeply touching love story. It's kind of violent and gory in some scenes, but such were the times during the civil war. I thought this was very well done and it's well worth seeing.

Still Breathing
(1997)

Beautiful, spellbinding
I can't remember how I came across this unheard-of movie a few years ago, but I am a fan of Brendan Fraser and so I settled back to watch it. I'd never heard one little thing about this movie before, and I was so pleasantly surprised with the whole experience. There was a quiet magic about the whole story. It was a beautiful, peaceful, serene experience just to watch the relationship develop and to enjoy those stunning scenic shots. When the movie ended I felt so relaxed and refreshed! Some months later I had a chance to watch it again, and once again it was like a calming meditation. "Beautiful" and "Magical" are the only two words coming to mind to describe this movie. It's excellent, and I recommend it highly if you're in the mood for something sweet and peaceful that will make you feel much more alive afterwards. I give it 8 out of 10. Wonderful movie.

Boat Trip
(2002)

Lots of laughs!
A friend, who is notoriously hard to please when it comes to comedies, said, "You should watch it, it's pretty funny." Coming from him, I figured it must be hilarious. So I did watch it, and had a great time! I was glad to see that the straight guys, while a little uncomfortable at first when they discovered they were on a gay cruise, relaxed and got to know some of the gay guys, hung out with them and became friends. The movie was well paced, sweet, and very funny. I didn't detect any "gay bashing" or homophobic themes here at all. The movie portrayed homosexuals as fun, caring, and interesting people who work in all different kinds of professions, perhaps hoping to make us realize that they are still only just people who deserve to be treated with respect and courtesy, and are certainly worthy to be called friends. I give it a 7 out of 10. There are a few spots of crude humour, but if you're lighthearted enough it won't bug you. Give it a shot, you'll have some good laughs!

Undercover Brother
(2002)

Excellent, hilarious, a must see!
I came across this movie by accident, channel surfing on the satellite, and I'm glad I found it! It's one of the funniest movies I've seen. The music was awesome, the gags were side-splitting. My favorite scene was Neil Patrick Harris shrieking, "Don't call me a SISSY!" I loved everything about it, and I will be buying the DVD and the soundtrack. Great laughs, light-hearted, very well done! I give it a 9/10!

Ishtar
(1987)

Great laughs, worth watching
I saw Ishtar in the theater when it first came out, and I had never heard an audience laugh so hard before. Everyone there (I recall the theater was pretty much packed) loved it. When it came out on video I was working in a small video store. The negative reviews had been out for some time, and everyone decided it was a lame movie without even seeing it. But every time I played this movie in the store, someone would ALWAYS end up asking me to take it out of the VCR so they could rent it. And as far as I remember, no one who rented it ever said they hated it! I'm glad to see so many positive comments posted here. It really is a very clever and funny movie, and I would recommend it to anyone. I still suggest it to people who are looking for a fun movie. This definitely is one of the most underrated movies I've seen. Go ahead and watch it!

The Patriot
(2000)

Well worth watching
While I understand that this movie is not a 100% accurate historical portrayal of the American Revolution, it is educational and touching nonetheless. I enjoyed everything about the movie - the acting was outstanding, as were the costumes and plot. There was terrific suspense, drama, laughs, action, and one total tear-jerker of a scene where Benjamin Martin's youngest daughter finally breaks her years of silence and cries out for him as he rides away back to the war. I just start bawling every time I see that.

The violence and gore was very graphic, but I'm confident that the real battle was even gorier than that which was on the screen. While some may find it too much, I think it does us viewers good to be reminded of the gruesome cost of war, in lives lost and in horrible injuries.

This movie was emotionally demanding, and yet inspirational. I rated it 9 out of 10, and give it a high recommendation to see.

Signs
(2002)

Not quite what I was expecting
The hype and the trailers seemed to hint at something more than what the movie actually offered. Gibson and Phoenix did a great job, as did the children. I wasn't satisfied with the story. I was expecting something along the lines of "interpret the signs, it's a code, here are answers to your biggest questions about life and the universe."

The acting was great, the whole emotional thing going on in the family really added a lot to the story. Great acting and suspense, but in general I was disappointed with the story.

The Mothman Prophecies
(2002)

Good heebie-jeebies!
I liked it! I love spooky, creepy, goose-bump inducing stories, and this one didn't disappoint! I had heard some pretty "blah" reviews for this movie, but I wanted to see it anyways. I'm glad I did! There were a couple of really good creep outs for me - one of them was John's reflection in his motel room mirror while he was talking on the phone. I thought I was seeing things...how could his reflection move before he did? Pretty cool...

Anyhow, I enjoyed watching this. I devoured every little detail and watched carefully to see where each one fit into the story as it developed. Very well done!

Brigham City
(2001)

Unexpected emotional powerhouse
I saw it last night. Wow. I woke up this morning still stunned about this movie. It was amazing. I've seen a lot of movies in my life, but there are very few that have wrenched my emotions like Brigham City has. It was nothing like I was expecting. I knew it was a drama, but I was quite honestly expecting a variation of "God's Army". No way. This movie blew me away. Suspenseful, thrilling, nerve-wracking, humorous, touching, and very emotional. Three scenes in particular really endeared me. Let me say first, however, that I noticed and appreciated a distinct lack of music during some of the most powerful scenes. I really liked that, and it made the scenes more realistic for me. The first "best" scene is when the sheriff drops in on his friends one Sunday afternoon and tries to break some tragic news to them. I could feel the tension and grief there, and I felt like I was going to be sick. I was pretty involved in that scene. The second "best" is the two old guys sitting in the park, commenting on events of the previous evening. One guy says, "I drove by there last night and every cop in town was there." The other guy says, "We only have two cops in town." The first guy says, "Yeah, well, they were both there." Hilarious. And the third "best" is the last scene of the movie, the sacrament meeting. Again I was very emotionally involved and I couldn't keep from crying. It was heartwrenching and uplifting at the same time. The quality of the script, acting, and the general emotional ride this movie provided just astounded me. I can't wait to see more of Richard Dutcher's work. Bravo! I loved it!

Bowfinger
(1999)

A wonderfully surprisingly funny and ingenious movie!
When I finally got around to seeing this movie, I thought I'd just be in for more of Steve Martin's often bizarre humor. Was I in for a surprise - this movie is terrific! The down 'n dirty look at struggling Hollywood wannabes, the desperate measures taken by a broke filmmaker in an attempt to finally make it big, the sneaky tactics they use to get free acting out of the biggest movie star, the diverse characters - I could go on for a long time about this! I was caught off guard so many times with the humor - getting "the best crew we can afford" in the desert; the dog with high heels, the backwards car chase, the crossing the freeway scene; "all our stunt drivers were very impressed." I was amazed at how hard it was for me to wrap my head around the fact that Eddie Murphy played both Kit Ramsey and his nerdy brother Jiff. Murphy is an outstanding actor (showcased as well in the Nutty Professor movies) and this role reinforced that fact. The brothers look alike (obviously...) but the similarity ends there. Murphy is incredibly talented, and Martin is his usual zany self. This is one of the most creative and enjoyable movies I've seen. Highly recommended!
