Rundfunk
(2015)

Comedy just van't get any better than this, 10/10
This is the best comedy show to have ever existed. I think I have never laughed so hard about a TV show, even when watching it for the 100th time.

The writers have really pushed the boundaries with their jokes, often going way too far, even for Dutch standards! But that's what makes this show so incredibly funny and what makes it so unique: there just simply doesn't exist a show that is more absurd than Rundfunk. In contrary to a lot of other absurd comedies, I think the jokes do not feel forced at all and never fail to make me laugh. In my opinion this show is way better than any of the other works of Yannick van de Velde and Tom van Kalmthout, so definitely check this one out if you're in for a good laugh!

Maid
(2021)

Most emotionally moving series I have ever seen, 10/10
This series has a little over 9 hours of watchtime, and I think I probably spent half of that crying out loud. I'm lost for words...

'Maid' is an incredibly well written show that deals with complex themes like domestic abuse, poverty and addiction among others. Despite the seriousness of these topics, it feels very natural because of the stellar writing of this show.

All of the characters are very complex (which I absolutely love). The characters and their relationships feel very real and I was able to empathize with all of them, even Sean at some times. Of course his aggression to Alex is completely unacceptible, but the show does a great job in showing that he is not simply some narcistic guy that is inherently bad. He actually loves Alex and Maddy, and his mental problems together with his abusive behavior are tracable to a number of horrible experiences in his childhood.

But of course what moved me the most, were the circumstances in which Alex had to take care for her daughter. Truly heartbreaking <3.

Feel Good

Rarely have I seen a more accurate depiction of addiction
This show is amazing, I absolutely loved it. It is not perfect and is pretty short, but the thing that makes it so strong is that takes a very deep dive into the emotional struggles of the two main characters (especially Mae) despite there being only about 4 hours worth of episodes.

The story is about the relationship between May and George, but they encounter a lot of problems in their relationship, largely due to Mae their trauma/addiction and George her insecurity/confusion about her sexuality. It is maybe not the most satisfying love story out there on Netflix, but it really distinguishes itself from others with the intense and relatable emotions in it.

One of the themes that is touched upon pretty often, is Mae and George their sexuality and Mae their gender identity. With myself being a cis-heterosexual, I couldn't really relate to this but I really liked it! I think it was really natural and well worked out, yet not overdone or forced like in some other shows or movies that have come out lately.

As someone struggling with pornography addiction I could really relate to Mae, and to how the addiction translated to other aspects of her life, especially her relationships with other people (mainly George!). It's been a long time since a show made me cry like this one did. But the great thing is that it is not necissarily a show that exhausts you emotionally. The episodes are only 20-30 minutes, and there is actually a lot of humour in them. I definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to see a show with some substance, but that you can still watch 'casually'.

Chihirosan
(2023)

Simple, yet very beautiful
The movie is about Chihiro, who lives a simple life, and doesn't care what other people think. She spreads a lot of love to other 'outcasts', while feeling lonely herself. She is a natural talent at making friends, yet she feels like she doesn't know anyone who she has a really deep connection with.

The story purely on itself wasn't really that special because the movie rather focusses on the relationships between the characters.

I love how Chihiro was portrayed: living life free, enjoying the moment, and just taking it easy. During the movie you see her make friendships with multiple people. Personally I'd say that some of these interactions where a little bit extreme, like practically taking a bath with a random homeless guy she just met.

These friendships are for me the main focus of the movie: I think in the western world a lot can be learnt from the way Chihiro helps total strangers in need.

The analogy with everyone coming from another planet was spot on in my opinion. This really hit close to home, as I've felt my entire life like I have never met anyone 'from the same planet'.

I would have liked a stronger focus on the loneliness that Chihiro felt herself. Personally it took me a while to notice that she did in fact suffer from loneliness, as she looked pretty content most of the time.

Also I would have loved to get a little bit more backstory about Chihiro. I think it could have fit well in the movie to know more about the person that Chihiro was in her previous life, and thereby adding some extra development to her character. There were some short references to her past, some flash backs even, but they were really kept to a minimum and were all very short. This left me longing for more!

Overall I would definitely recommend this movie if you are willing to invest the time, and don't mind the slow paced story.

7.3/10.
