City Lights
(1931)

Gets stronger as it progresses
A lot of movies from the 30's nowadays look slow in filming, but City Lights still holds up pretty well AD 2004.

I find the first half hour of the movie a bit weak. The jokes never are really funny and it seems a bit too many reproductions from previous successes. But after 30 minutes the movie really takes off!

Unforgettable scenes like picking up the cigar bum, while driving in a Rolls Royce and the sublime boxing scene, makes this movie worth watching.

It all accumulates in the final scene, Autumn, one the most touching and emotional scenes created in cinematography.

Panic Room
(2002)

Disappointing
I've found this a rather disappointing movie. The thing that bugs me most in movies, is when characters explain to each other why they act as they do. This is exactly what is going on and it's so lame. It could have been solved, by providing us with feedbacks so we could understand the deeds of the burglars in a more natural way.

Also what others reviewers already noted, this movie suffers from a very cripple scenario and ditto plot, which holds you back from getting involved to the events in the movie.

On the upside this movie has some good acting and inventive camera work, so I voted 6 out of 10.

High Fidelity
(2000)

Finest movie I've seen in a long time
Without doubt, this is one of the finest movies I've seen in a long time. The story has a very surprising perspective, in which the main character addresses you directly, therefore soaking you into his life.

Good laughs, funny dialogs compensate for a more serious underlying theme: "what has sexual freedom done to the way we handle relationships".

Actually this movie is good, that it's even fun to watch the outtakes included on the DVD.

Singin' in the Rain
(1952)

A homage to movies and actors
This movie still stands as a rock today, over half a century after its release. As movies from the 40s and 50s seem to be a bit slow compared to today's standards (for example in movement and conversation) this is certainly not the case in 'Singin' in the Rain'.

Maybe 'The Sound Of Music' is a winner when it comes down to remarkable and memorable tunes, but this movie also has a few pretty tricks on its sleeve.

First of all there is the fabulous and superb choreography and (tap) dancing, one of the most impressive achievements in movie history.

Secondly this movie is a homage to movies and actors, in their struggles to make the movie a mature form of art.

And last but not least, there is humor all over the place. Especially the ups and downs of making and releasing the first 'talkie' musical is extremely funny.

'Singin' in the rain' is therefore a milestone in the evolution of movie making and deserves to be watched by everyone who likes dance and musical.

Ja zuster, nee zuster
(2002)

Remarkable DVD
Today the DVD version of the movie was released in Holland and as a big fan I've just run through the DVD.

A simple, yet effective story line combined with the outstanding music and strong character play makes this an excellent movie for children.

A funny trivia about the movie is, that the movie almost had to be canceled, because the Red Cross organization was not happy with the use of the red cross on the clothing of the main character, Zuster Klivia. Luckily this dispute could be settled and you can see the Zuster with a retouched blue cross cap.

"Ja Zuster, Nee Zuster" originally was a series that ran in the mid sixties in Holland. It depended heavily on the excellent songs and certainly not on intriguing story lines. Because film tapes were expensive in the 60's, other material was recorded over it and for a long time all film material was believed to be lost. Yet in recent years some of the original material was rediscovered.

From this original material 15 songs were selected and added as a bonus to this DVD, making this DVD also a must have for older generations.

Oh Boy!
(1991)

Funny Dutch movie
Although it's been quite a long time since I've seen this movie, I still remember it to be a very funny one.

It's actually a movie within movie...the crew is being followed during their hard time to create a movie. Not only are their problems on a technical level, but the relations between the movie stars lead to funny situations.

Finally I'd like to make a tribute to one of the best Dutch comedians: Kees van Kooten, in Holland best known for his appearances on TV-shows with his partner Wim de Bie (mid sixties to 1998).

Moulin Rouge!
(2001)

Simply beautiful
I watched this movie 'unprepared' not having read a review, comment or anything. Just rented the DVD from the local library.

I was preparing for a mind boggling, psychedelic 120 minutes experience , based on the first minutes of the movie. Yet it gradually transforms into a simple, beautiful love story.

And yes, I liked this movie very much but approach it with an open mind. Don't get upset when people in a 1900 setting start to sing a Nirvana/ Kurt Cobain tune....:)

So all in all, I find this a beautiful movie, which I'm certainly will be going watch a few times more.

The Persuaders!
(1971)

Creepy theme song
The thing I always remember from the Persuaders is the theme song by John Barry. Back then as a little boy it really gave me the creeps..

Now over 30 years later, I still can understand why. The mystical zither melody line, the threatening violins and last but not least the moaning moog bass line, made you prepare for the worst to come.

And that while the series itself where rather upbeat and frivol. Of course Tony Curtis and Roger Moore teamed up perfectly.

If you get the chance you should really listen to the theme song.

What's Love Got to Do with It
(1993)

Great movie
As a musician i really like the accurate way in which their show performances were shot. Absolutely fabulous!

Highlight for me was of course the recording session of Proud Mary, which gives you nice insight on how Phil Spector used make his recordings.

My only dislike was the physical state of Tina in the movie. As I could recall she was no body builder! Luckily at the end of the picture Tina herself appears, and I could check she has no muscled arms!

But nevertheless, a great movie!

Jack
(1996)

The kids liked it
Robin Williams is doing a pretty good job as a mentally 10-year old kid, trapped in the body of a 40-year old man.

The main reason my kids wanted to watch is because the movie featured Jennifer Lopez (and she is hot right now with kids!). But this movie was clearly before her break through and her role is small. This movie really is about Robin Williams, Robin Williams and Robin Williams.

It's a pretty amusing story, with some funny moments. So if you're looking for a harmless movie to please your kids I can recommend it.

Broken Arrow
(1996)

I pity John Travolta
I really can't see why an actor like John Travolta took a role in this movie. A bunch of effects can't cover up this incredible story (stealth pilot wants to steal some nuclear weapons). As one of the characters suggests in the movie: "You can buy a nuclear weapon for the prize of a BMW in russia". Yeah the heck, why didn't they, then we didn't have to watch this crap.

John's main activity in this movie is to explain to the viewers why his actions fit in his overall scheme. But nevertheless, they make no sense.

My 8 old year son called this movie "boring". I agree.

The Strawberry Statement
(1970)

Interesting movie about the hippy era
This movie gives you a good look at the student revolt (late sixties/ early seventies). Although some of the camera, sequencing and cutting techniques are out of date, the movie does have its moments.

The main character, Simon, is a student and he's gradually getting more and more involved in the student movement.

The final scenes (sweeping of the students) I found very impressing, almost as if you were watching a documentary.

8 out of 10
